Join Verasight co-founder @pete_enns for "Forecasting the 2026 U.S. House Election at the District Level," a virtual lunch and learn hosted by NYAAPOR on Friday, October 23, 12:00 to 1:00 PM Eastern. Peter will present a district-level forecast of the 2026 midterm elections. The model would have correctly predicted the House majority in each of the last 14 elections. In addition to the forecast, he will discuss the historical accuracy of the model, how polling data inform the predictions, and what the forecast can teach us about campaign dynamics and potential election anomalies. The model builds on Peter’s 2024 presidential election forecast, which correctly predicted the outcome in every state and forecasted Donald Trump’s popular vote within 1 percentage point. "When we asked participants how much they would support a nuclear waste facility that was 10 miles away... they actually had higher support than when we asked them how much they would support it if it was 50 miles... if it's closer, the community feels like they have some sort of control over it." Sara Ostad Rahimi, PhD Candidate in Science Communication at @UWMadison, on her work and her paper, published this year in the Journal of Risk Research, "Perceived risks, benefits, and support for siting energy infrastructure: comparing perceptions of carbon capture, nuclear fuel, and large-scale energy facilities." Our mission at Verasight is to expand access to high-quality survey data. Today, we’re taking a major step forward on that journey by launching Verasight Self-Serve where researchers can instantly launch studies to our verified community. Three things that make Verasight Self-Serve different: - Multi-mode recruitment. Verasight panelists are recruited through address-based sampling, person-to-person text messaging, and dynamic online targeting. - Voter validation and voter file appends. Registered voter samples are validated with official voter file records, and voter file data can be appended to your responses. - Survey weights. Weights to Census data and benchmarks are produced when fielding closes, which ensures your sample reflects the true population and enables researchers to compare estimates over time. Verasight Self-Serve works with any survey programming software. If your questionnaire is in a Word processing document, you can upload it and have it converted to a Qualtrics QSF file rather than rebuilding it by hand. If you’re planning research this fall, Verasight Self-Serve data is 10% off through the remainder of 2026. Just email [email protected] for your discount code. "One really encouraging result that we saw is that all of the messages we tested resulted in a modest increase in trust in health professionals to communicate climate change information. So that's great. It shows that not only are these messages not backfiring, not reducing trust in health professionals as sources of climate change information, but they're actually boosting that." "When legislators vote against their party... their constituents are very unlikely to guess that. They become worse than chance at guessing how their member voted on a roll call vote. When their member voted with their party, then people are pretty good at guessing how their member voted." @CTausanovitch, Professor of Political Science at @UCLA, on his work and his paper with John Murphy, conditionally accepted at the American Political Science Review, "Party and Accountability in Congress." The new ECU Poll from @EastCarolina's Center for Survey Research finds Democratic nominee Roy Cooper leading Republican nominee Michael Whatley 50% to 43% in North Carolina's 2026 U.S. Senate race, with 6% undecided. A majority of likely voters (55%) name the economy and cost of living as their top issue. Verasight provided the poll's online panel (N=223), used to supplement responses from voters ages 18 to 29 and Hispanic voters. The survey of 810 likely voters combined that panel with a statewide random sample of registered voters who completed it by text (N=587). Thank you to @PeterLFrancia and the ECU Center for Survey Research team for partnering with us.

"You have these political elites in Washington say, well, voters are too stupid. They like things the way they are. And in fact, one of the things that you see in poll after poll, and this poll shows it again, people actually really don't like the way things are. People are really hungry for shaking things up and doing something different." @leedrutman, Senior Fellow in the Political Reform Program at @NewAmerica and co-founder of @FixOurHouse, on the New America and Fix Our House national poll on proportional representation. The poll was fielded by Verasight. Read the poll findings here: newamerica.org/insights/prop… Watch the full interview on YouTube: youtu.be/F3Rw4v9Qzqo

Verasight CEO Ben Leff was interviewed for a new story from @benzinga by Daragh Thomas: "EXCLUSIVE: Too Late for Trump to Save the Midterms? Even Iran Deal, Lower Gas Prices Unlikely to Spark Major Swing, Verasight CEO Says." Asked whether lower gas prices could shift the midterms, Leff said: "I don’t think people necessarily put much weight on what the president says, but if they truly feel gas prices drop, that would drive them more than just being told they would." He also discussed Verasight's policy against wagering on prediction markets: "There needs to be a real wall between pollsters and prediction markets." The story was also picked up by Yahoo News. What makes Americans most likely to support a data center in their community? In our latest survey, we proposed several scenarios to respondents: Without a community investment, most Americans (78%) oppose a large data center being built within 10 miles of their home, including 53% who strongly oppose it. The opposition is bipartisan: 88% of Democrats and 67% of Republicans. Now suppose the company building that data center agreed to invest about $100 million in the community over ten years. Support depends on how the money is used: 70% favor the data center if the money is used to lower residents' electricity bills and 66% if it is paid directly to residents, about $5,000 per household. 55% favor it for a $50,000 bonus for all public school teachers, 53% if it is paid to local police and fire departments, and 26% if it is paid to the local government to use however they wish. Republicans are the most supportive when the money goes to residents directly: 80% favor the data center if the money is used to lower residents' electricity bills and 78% if it is paid directly to residents, compared with 28% if the money goes to the local government with no strings attached. "When a Republican receives aid from a government program, there's a bit of a cognitive dissonance, right? Because on one hand, this program is helping me, but on the other hand, government aid recipients are bad. They're undeserving, they're lazy, they're entitled." Chris Ellis, Professor of Political Science at @BucknellU, on his work and his paper with Chris Faricy, published this year in Policy Studies Journal, "Partisanship, Deservingness, and the Attitudinal Policy Feedback Process for Social Policy."
