Honored to receive the @SPJdetroit Sojourner Truth Award for racial justice reporting last night (and @MichiganPress's Wade McCree Award for the Advancement of Justice last month). For years it felt as if I was screaming into the void about Detroit cops plucking young Black guys off the street for nonviolent offenses and shooting them as they ran away -- yes, even when they had guns. Grateful to see there are like-minded people in this profession who agree that's a problem. Sadly, it's a tough space to have impact, and carrying a gun -- even for your own protection in a high-crime city -- can still be a death sentence, but at least the issue is now on policymakers' radar. Thank you to my editor @cmacfreep for believing in this work and seeing it through; thank you to my other editor, @DetroitReporter, for suggesting I widen the scope of my look into police shootings when I first came to him with the idea just two months after starting at @freep; and thank you to @FundFIJ for covering the thousands of dollars in FOIA costs to obtain the records this reporting was built on. My package of reports from 2025: freep.com/story/news/investi… freep.com/story/news/investi… freep.com/story/news/local/m… freep.com/story/news/local/m… freep.com/story/news/local/m… freep.com/story/news/local/m… And one from 2024 (anchored by a *legal* gun owner shot by police): freep.com/story/news/investi… Please help us continue this type of ambitious, ground-breaking work and SUBSCRIBE. help.freep.com/subscription-…

notable slip by Fleisher, CEO of Detroit's biggest privately owned real estate company, as he raises that the RenCen nonprofit would be structured to allow lobbying: "As much fun as this is, we may want to retire from politics after this."

Abdul is great but the person I’m focused on in this video if his press staffer. She’s on top of it & directing the show. She’s scouting the gaggle & making sure her boss gets his word in. I also like her lil smile she did when Abdul was answering the Obama question.

Detroit activists are calling on Chief Bettison to fire the cop who chased and shot a teen in the back, shouting “I’ll shoot you bitch,” so I’m revisiting the chief’s response when I asked him about cases like this a year ago, which was basically, “Not a problem, but talk nicer”

DPD has stopped releasing video of police shootings. @andreamsahouri obtained this one from the summer fireworks incident. Was the man shot while running away a threat?
