Many moons ago, I posted this screenshot complaining about a memory leak issue connected to the Nikke launcher process "tbs_browser.exe". At the time, the solution was blocking that executable from accessing the internet through Windows Firewall
Today I learned that this action had the unintentional side effect of protecting me from the launcher compromise that happened today.
Since the attacker communicates with infected PCs through the launcher's embedded browser, blocking the browser from having internet access all that time ago prevented my PC from downloading the payload being sent.
Since this blew up somehow, if you want to block the process to be safer in the future, you can find tbs_browser.exe at the same place where debug.log is located: <[drive Nikke is installed in]\NIKKE\Launcher\intl_service\tbs_browser.exe>
Add an inbound and outbound rule in your Windows Firewall to block the executable from connecting to the internet.
In the literal year since I did this, there have been no notable side effects in Nikke, aside from the game launcher being completely empty (no promotions, tweets, videos, patch notes, etc.)
Web related services like in-app purchases, web events, and CD-Key redemption all continued to function normally.
"Inconvenience" bruh the launcher put an RCE malware bug on people's PCs, this is a little more than an inconvenience
