I fully support the UAE’s Lana Nusseibeh for UN Secretary-General. 🇦🇪
At a moment when some Western voices appear to dismiss the possibility of constructive regional leadership, she stands as a clear example of Arab excellence, focused on results rather than rhetoric.
Regardless of her criticisms of aspects of Israeli military policy, she consistently called for the unconditional release of the hostages taken by Hamas on 7 October 2023 and viewed the Abraham Accords as a practical opportunity for the UAE to become a leading provider of humanitarian aid to Gaza. These are positions that set her apart from many (if not most) of her UN colleagues.
Furthermore, Lana has long worked to create better opportunities for women and girls in the MENA region. In 2013, Nusseibeh brought UN Women’s Liaison Office for the GCC to Abu Dhabi under the leadership of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak. Her efforts advancing the UN's Women, Peace and Security Agenda is remarkable.
Finally, Lana belongs to a distinguished Arab Muslim family entrusted with guardianship of Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre during the Muslim conquests of the Levant. Her grandfather, Palestinian judge Anwar Nusseibeh—a Cambridge contemporary of future Israeli Foreign Minister Abba Eban—served as Jordan’s representative on the 1951 truce committee and was among the first Palestinians to engage in contacts with Israel after its 1967 capture of the city’s Arab sector. The family’s longstanding practice of setting aside fierce disagreements to reach peaceful settlements is a trait of particular value to the UN today.

The 7 October attacks were a barbaric act of terror. Today, we stand with Israel in remembering every life taken and destroyed at the hands of the Hamas terrorists.
Our thoughts are with the victims, the survivors, their families and all those who continue to carry the pain of that terrible day.
We must firmly reject any form of antisemitism across Europe. Jewish communities must be able to live openly, safely and without fear.
Hamas brought unspeakable suffering to the Israeli people and left devastation in its wake. Hamas must disarm so that the Gaza Peace Plan to move forward.

this is a very cynical interpretation but...
could it be that the fearmongering of recent weeks is a way of gently introducing their investor base to the concept that Anthropic will be internalizing all major breakthroughs rather than letting the unwashed masses share in the spoils?
selling tokens is probably a better business model, as opposed to relying on very lumpy biotech (& other scientific) discoveries, but if distillation really is an unacceptable margin compressor, Anthropic is incentivized to keep the frontier private and capitalize themselves on new IP rather than letting their clients have them
and instead of outright admitting their token merchant business model is unsustainable, Anthropic could announce they are "pacing the frontier" and hold the general public six months or a year+ behind the true frontier - available only to their own internal researchers. of course, this would require the cooperation of their archrival, OpenAI, so Anthropic didn't appear to be too behind. all the better if they created a legal cartel and voluntarily agreed to slow the public frontier. they'd have to ask the government for an antitrust waiver though. really activates the almonds, doesn't it.
this is speculation. perhaps the fear really is genuine and this is just happens to be an extremely convenient state of affairs.
ANTHROPIC BUILDS BIOLOGY LAB TO PUSH AI INTO DRUG DEVELOPMENT
Anthropic has quietly established a Bay Area wet lab, moving its life-sciences ambitions beyond computer simulations and into physical biological experiments.
The company wants Claude to direct laboratory robots with limited human intervention, potentially accelerating research into rare and traditionally “undruggable” diseases.
Anthropic says it will focus on preclinical research rather than clinical trials, avoiding direct competition with pharmaceutical companies.

Breaking: Nicaragua’s dictator, Daniel Ortega, announced today that his country will no longer hold elections.
Here’s @BernieSanders celebrating his role in advising Ortega after he took power, and praising the very socialist dictator who has now abolished elections.
Nicaragua's long-serving president Daniel Ortega said the Central American country will no longer hold elections, eliminating the possibility of an electoral challenge when his term ends next year and further entrenching the rule he shares with his wife reut.rs/4wSoC0o
Because sexual violence often happens behind closed doors, it can be hard to find corroborating witnesses. But when multiple survivors describe abuse by the same person, judges and juries get to hear more of the story.
Unfortunately, in some states—including New York—rules of evidence keep juries from hearing about prior acts of sexual violence. That can leave survivors standing alone in court, even when other survivors have come forward.
The Weinstein case shows why this matters. After repeated trials, prosecutors dropped the remaining rape charge because the survivor said she could not endure going through the process again. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is now calling on legislators to update the law.
