In 1989 Sarah Vaughan was 65 and still touring. She had smoked heavily all her adult life, at times more than two packs a day. That year she cancelled a string of concerts in Europe. The reason given was arthritis in her hand. She went ahead with a tour of Japan and then opened at the Blue Note in New York. During the Blue Note run doctors told her she had lung cancer. She kept singing until the last night of the booking, when she was too ill to go on. She never performed in public again. She went home to California and started chemotherapy. For months she moved back and forth between her house in Hidden Hills and the hospital. By the spring of 1990 she had had enough of treatment. She told the hospital she wanted to be taken home.On the evening of 3 April she was watching a television movie called “Laker Girls”. One of the actresses in it was her daughter, Deborah, who worked under the name Paris Vaughan. Sarah Vaughan was watching it when she died. She was 66.

Sarah Vaughan asked to leave the hospital and go home. She died that evening while watching her daughter on television.
