Kevin Hart had a shot at Uber for $50,000 to $75,000. He passed because it sounded “like murderville.” Uber went public at $82 billion.
Mark Cuban passed too, and he knew the founder.
In the video below, Hart and Cuban take turns telling how each of them missed Uber.
Music executive Troy Carter pitched it to Hart. There’s an app. You need a ride, and a stranger nearby comes and picks you up.
“Sounds like murderville to me,” Hart told him. “I don’t know that person. I ain’t picking them up.”
Years earlier, Cuban had rescued Travis Kalanick’s first company when it was running out of money.
Then Kalanick came to him with something called UberCab, at a $10 million valuation.
Cuban loved it. “I’ll do it at $5 million,” he said. Kalanick found someone else and never came back.
In fairness to both men: in 2010, getting into a stranger’s car did sound insane. And Cuban’s warning was right. He told Kalanick the taxi commissions would fight to put him out of business. They did, and Uber didn’t post a full year of operating profit until 2023.
Cuban was right about everything except the ending.
He shrugs it off. “I’ve done okay.” Hart can’t. “Until this day, I think about it,” he says. “I kind of avoid seeing Troy Carter.”
On the Street, the deal that sounds stupid in the room is the only one nobody else is bidding on.
Would you have put $75,000 into riding with strangers in 2010, or said what Kevin Hart said?

We’ve raised $1.3M from YC & Afore Capital so you never have to type or speak again.
Typing is slow. Talking into your computer is awkward. Subvocal fixes both
Our glasses give you the speed of speech without you making a sound or touching a keyboard.
It tracks your internal speech muscles with non-contact sensing and decodes silent, almost invisible mouthing into text at more than 200 words/min.
Pre-orders are now live at:

1/ Maybe the bigger lesson in the Binance hack wasn't abt Binance or their key management. Its about how fast the money was moved that left Binance no time to react.
Onchain, a $100m transfer settles as fast as a $10 one. $6b left hot wallets in ~20 mins.
This should change.
Imagine the next web browser has this significant support for panels and not limit users on the number of panels in the same screen. 😍
Actually.. we want it on almost every app. And, I can just buy a bigger monitor if I need it.
Woa!
The Origin Story of Github Copilot:
In 2020, @GitHub had just acquired my startup, Semmle, and the CEO, @natfriedman, gave me free rein to find our next product.
At the time, I had a bee in my bonnet: GitHub had more data than anyone else about developer behavior, but it wasn’t using that data to build new products.
I started exploring how to change that.
In June 2020, I got early access to GPT-3 and saw its potential to write code, especially if trained on the code on GitHub. It was the obvious project to work on.
It could generate a little code on its own, but almost always got it wrong. So I gave the model a set of 50 programming puzzles, the kind I used to set at Oxford entrance interviews.
I asked the model to solve each puzzle 1,000 times, using automated tests to check it. Given enough attempts, it got almost all of them right. That's when I knew it would be able to code.
I assembled a small initial team of ~10 people to work on what became GitHub Copilot. The first two people who joined were co-founders of the project: @thewunderalbert and @alexgraveley
Fortunately key people at OpenAI shared our vision, and it was the perfect partnership at the perfect time with @sama, @gdb, @ilyasut, @DarioAmodei and Sam McCandlish (months before Anthropic was born!), @npew and several others.
OpenAI trained the model behind it, Codex, and we built the product around it. It ran inside VS Code and suggested lines of code and functions as you typed.
The VS Code team, led by @ErichGamma, moved mountains to give us exactly what we needed. The Azure AI team of Misha Bilenko also helped make it scalable.
When we launched the technical preview in June 2021, it hit 1.2 million users in 12 months. It was an instant hit with developers and helped write billions of lines of code.
It also left me with an uncomfortable thought. The models had learned to code from public source code, and public source code has a lot of vulnerabilities in it.
It was easier than ever to write vulnerable code, and developers were shipping it faster than ever.
But, I knew that if AI could write the code, it could find the holes in it too. It was imperative that defenders got it before attackers did.
In 2023, I left GitHub to build @Xbow to do exactly that. Since then, we've already helped our customers find and fix more than 14,000 zero-days and the work has only just begun.
The same team that started the AI coding revolution is now leading the charge on AI security.
Why do they do that when we're working all day with all serious stuff? This seems so joyful.

🚨EXCLUSIVE MICROSOFT LEAK:
Employees are questioning if Microsoft is abusing H-1B and PERM programs.
A Senior Director at MSFT (good friend of mine) just sent me internal messages between MSFT & some of its employees.
Today, Microsoft just asked THOUSANDS of its employees to voluntarily resign, despite just reporting $133.7B in net income for FY26, up 31%.
Employees are questioning why MSFT isn’t pro-actively downsizing by removing H1B employees before American workers.
Other employees are asking why any employee cuts are being made when profits are so high.
Fair question if ya ask me.
See below to see all of the orgs being asked to voluntarily resign.
This is absolutely going to impact Washington States workers.
