5 years ago today, downtown Providence businesses boarded up, fearing a repeat of widespread vandalism, looting that had happened a few nights earlier after George Floyd's death. So much plywood that Westminster St. smelled like a Home Depot.

The new bench swings at India Point Park remind me of the swings in Burlington Vt.'s waterfront park. Except the view of the Adirondacks from the Burlington swings cannot be matched in Providence unfortunately.

That grassy plot behind Trader Joe's in Providence is going to stay that way for the foreseeable future because a $70M project anchored by BankRI's new HQ has been halted... pbn.com/plans-for-70m-projec… via @Katie_c912

The developer for Parcel 14/15 along Providence River has submitted reworked plans (left) for a 214-unit apartment building. (The ghostly white buildings are a future phase) The old 198-unit plans are on the right. Thoughts? pbn.com/i-195-commission-to-… via Katie_c912

Trivia about Trinity Brew's location: During WWII, it served as The Journal Canteen, where servicemen could dance with USO hostesses. In early '45, Anthony Quinn appeared there for his film "Back to Bataan." Neon sign seen top left hung in ProJo cafeteria until 2016. ProJo photo

Ah, found a photo I took in 2015 of the Journal Canteen sign in the ProJo cafeteria. At the time it was 70-plus years old and still working perfectly...

A sad moment on Atwells Avenue in Providence this morning... The Federal Hill equivalent of the Independent Man being taken off the Statehouse dome. Except this sign isn't going back up #RIPOldCanteen

For everyone who's asked: Apparently, the new owners plan on refurbishing the sign and reusing it as decoration on the inside of the building.

I must say at the top of a 6-floor, 122-year-old brick building in downtown Providence, the earthquake didn't feel weak. Maybe light. Definitely some swaying.
Anybody in Providence just feel an earthquake? Our building downtown was swaying much like it did during that earthquake last year.

Good news for the new operators of Providence Place. The Macy's at that mall, plus the ones at Warwick Mall and Emerald Square Mall, were NOT on the closure list of 66 stores. Actually, kinda surprised the store at Emerald Square is sticking around. cnn.com/2025/01/10/business/…

Rang in 2025 with a ride to R.I.'s new cross-border bikeway connection into Mass. (the state line is marked anticlimactically with a small stone pylon) and includes a cool traverse over a rehabbed old train viaduct about 200 feet into Blackstone.

Strange story. Two months of 3 paychecks has been the case every year since biweekly paychecks were invented. And it will continue every year until the end of time and biweekly paychecks.

Gawd, I have a close family member getting a double whammy here Her data may have been stolen in a breach at Providence school district in Sept (dealing with credit checks). Now her personal info may be stolen again in this breach. Wonder how many are in the same boat.
