I’ve spent the last two weeks in China for my honeymoon, and have visited around twenty bookstores.
Three writers who I was surprised to see in almost every single location (often prominently in the “highlights” section):
- Milan Kundera
- Jean-Paul Sartre
- Walter Benjamin
I admire what Rick has done for the World of Independent Letters. Wishing him well.
#45. SUBMISSION ('Soumission') by Michel Houellebecq, translated from the French by Lorin Stein. Published 2015.
#46. CHILDHOOD ('Barndom'), Part One of The Copenhagen Trilogy by Tove Ditlevsen. Translated from the Danish by Tiina Nunnally. Published in 2019.
Seems to be simply because the text is in the public domain. Still wild that a translator isn't credited anywhere (even if it's the old anonymous one).
Anyone know what the story is with the translator erasure in these "Signature Editions"?
I cracked this open and couldn't find any evidence of a translator anywhere in it (including a complete lack of translator copyright on the ISBN page).
Are these AI translations?
"Zone feeds Compass" [and should be read in that order to reflect this].
One of many takeaways from a thoughtful discussion this morning with @avecsesdoigts and Ben on @beyondzeropod.
Plenty on Mathias Énard, Jonathan Littell, Céline, and more coming soon on the pod.

Slight correction:
This reprint is out. The new translation is what's allegedly slated for 2026.
Looks like I missed the memo, but the long-rumoured reprint of Backlands is confirmed via Calimari Archive in 2026.
