Yesterday, UN Ambassador and former Special Forces Officer Mike Waltz held up a photograph of former Cuban leader Fidel Castro with a red circle around two Rolexes, which he said represent “$40,000 in today’s money.”

Castro routinely wore multiple watches, sometimes on the same wrist. Collector lore says he set the watches to Havana, Moscow, and Washington, D.C.’s time zones (the third utilizing the GMT function). Whether he wore them for status or for function is still debated.

Waltz used the image and others to make the point that the revolution was never for the people, just the people at the top. Needless to say, things got spicy, and an argument with the Cuban delegation ensued.

How do you feel about homage watches? Where is the line between honoring history and stealing a design? This is something I struggle with. Pictured is one of my favorite “affordable” watches, the homage TR-660.

Pictured is one of my favorite “affordable” watches, the TR-660. The quality is exceptional, and it is a clear “homage” to the original Tornek-Rayville TR-900, a Blancpain Fifty Fathoms rebranded under an American name so it could be sold to the U.S. Navy in the 1960s.

The name and the insignia on the dial both come from Merrill's Marauders, the WWII unit formed in 1943 to fight in Burma. The unit was a precursor to the modern 75th Ranger Regiment, the culture of which is built on their legacy.

SEAL Team Six Tudor Pelagos FXD unit watch on the wrist of Medal of Honor recipient Master Chief Ed Byers during Savannah Bananas game. (A sentence I never thought I would write, but ally.)

The watch is the Gold Squadron variant, which, in contrast to the commercially available version, has a simpler “two-line” dial with “PELAGOS” executed in gold and “660 ft”. Most visibly, the hook and loop strap has a “gold” center stripe, in contrast to the regular red stripe.
