I am thrilled to share I was selected for an @NSF CAREER grant to launch a new phase of work on mortality + tech. Huge thanks to the Identity Lab and the support of my collaborators, @cuinfoscience, and @CUBoulderCMCI. Here is a write up, thread follows.

AI and the afterlife? A great write-up of work that we've been doing at @cuinfoscience with @merrierm.
AI ghosts could haunt your future. They're entities designed to simulate a person: their personality, voice, even their image via video streaming. When you think what the "talking dead" could do to the world, it's hard to stop talking about it oneself. Fascinating by @merrierm & @whatknows (see replies for link)
Talking about digital legacies on @scifri and how we use technology to bring people together, including when our loved ones have died.
Information scientist @whatknows used to think it best to delete the social media profiles of deceased loved ones. His research changed his mind: buff.ly/8pmUDHF

ALT "We leave our towns to go to college. We go to the big city for that job. This is sounding like a Hallmark movie. But not everyone’s going to be able to come back to honor someone when they die. And it turns out that when we can’t get together in person, well, we get together online." —Jed Brubaker

Each of us will die, and data about our death will travel through vast information systems. In this #cscw2024 paper, @dylantdoyle @cfiesler @whatknows and @jesspater map the mortality data ecosystem and suggest how to improve it. tinyurl.com/ydn8jz4m-cscw202…

Thanks to the CU Boulder media team @cuinfoscience @CUBoulder for covering our research on improving suicide bereavement support on social media platforms. Studies linked in 🧵Thanks as always to the research team 🙌🙌@whatknows @bkeegan @svoida colorado.edu/today/2024/09/2…
Thrilled to announce our @acm_chi #CHI2024 workshop, AI and the Afterlife! Spend a day with an emerging community, learn from interdisciplinary experts, and engage in design explorations. Check out bit.ly/chi-ai-afterlife for more details, or contact me directly.
Still one of my favorite collaborations to date. A lot of work surrounds death, even on Wikipedia.

Touched by the thoughtful responses from @wikihistories on my recent article (w/ @katyweathington) on queer identities in @wikidata. @cap_and_gown and Michael Falk provide some generous thoughts: wikihistories.net/2023/06/05… Provocative questions follow.
@cap_and_gown asks “[We should] ask of Wikidata, what work is standardisation doing and for whom at this moment in time?” <- A question we should ask about all data and tech at all times.
🎉 Please join me in welcoming the newly minted Dr. @morganklauss who just successfully defended his dissertation “Envisioning Identity: The Social Production of Computer Vision Systems.”

As a qualitative-leaning scholar, I tend to think of my computational tools as collaborators that let me see the world through different lenses. I am so excited that this work on Qual+ML+Vis is getting out there!
How can ML+VIS support qualitative data analysis?

I learned this morning that two conservative former Boulder City Council members have launched a campaign to oppose new funding Boulder's public libraries.
When people ask "who would oppose libraries?" we now have our answer.
.@concept3d_maps, I think your service is down or struggling. @CUBoulderOIT and @uofsandiego's maps seem to not be loading correctly. E.g.: colorado.edu/map
