Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe are shipping agent payment tools for finance teams with spending limits. Limits only work when the authorization trail is trusted data: Proof of Origin, Process, and State on who the agent is, what it was allowed to spend, and what settled, without leaking proprietary payment logic.
During @money2020, agent payments found their market: the finance team. On 20 and 21 October, @Visa launched a live pilot, @Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines and @stripe announced Treasury for agents. All three serve businesses. πŸ’³ @Mastercard's release puts it plainly: A business gives an agent a job and a spending limit. Controllers and CFOs already work that way. πŸ’³ @Visa's pilot runs between @billcom buyers and @billtrust suppliers. A business sits at each end of every payment. Visa's Nelsen says the team is testing how identity, payment controls and transaction visibility can make that model work. πŸ’³ Many new startups are one person. In Q2, 63% formed through Stripe Atlas had a solo founder. Stripe's new product lets those founders have an agent check balances, pay invoices, move funds and convert currencies. The consumer side is live too. @Google's Lisa Yokoyama said in Las Vegas: "We launched UCP-enabled checkout flows through a lot of popular retailers and merchants across the US." Kudos to the BILL and @Billtrust teams for testing this with real suppliers. I expect agent volume to appear in accounts payable real soon.

1:31:33 β€” The snowball. βœ… Likely the most significant revelation of this conversation. Over the next 6 to 12 months, Tom expects a snowball effect across ISO, digital assets, agentic payments, stablecoins, and CBDCs, with each piece accelerating the others as adoption compounds.πŸ“ˆ

My full conversation with Tom Alaerts, who spent over 27 years at SWIFT working on the standards the global payment system runs on.πŸ˜Άβ€πŸŒ«οΈ Every technical difficulty has been cut out. What is left in this video below is the complete conversation from start to finish, for anyone who wants to watch the entirety of the Spaces and catch every massive piece of confirmation in full. πŸŽ™οΈ During this conversation, Tom addressed several popular topics in the regulated financial space. πŸ—£οΈ Here are a few of the major takeaways from this insightful conversation: 0:09:51 β€” SWIFT is not going anywhere. βœ… Tom explains that SWIFT's position is backed by decades of trust, security, and governance that the global banking system already relies on, and any new network has to work with that reality instead of pretending it can be replaced overnight. 0:31:25 β€” ISO 20022 and digital assets have a strong relationship. βœ… Tom walks through how the ISO standards world and digital assets are already connected, and why that connection is structural, built into how the standards themselves were designed, not a recent experiment. 0:32:01 β€” ISO-compliant fintechs and digital currency networks have a higher likelihood of integration into central bank payment systems and SWIFT. βœ… Tom confirms that because they already speak the same language those systems are being built on, they become better candidates to partner with banks. 0:54:44 β€” SWIFT and ISO 20022 are not just messaging. βœ… Tom makes clear that the standard reaches far beyond moving messages from one bank to another. It extends into how value, data, and settlement connect across the entire system. That level of firsthand insight is almost never shared this openly in public, which is exactly what makes this conversation so important. FULL CONVERSATION TIMESTAMPS 0:00 β€” SMQKE's welcome 0:03:31 β€” Tom's introduction 0:08:14 β€” SWIFT's role and staying power 0:35:34 β€” Early blockchain discussions at SWIFT 0:40:46 β€” ISO 20022 transition 1:01:44 β€” Compatibility: which networks get adopted 1:13:07 β€” pacs.crypto and agentic finance 1:30:03 β€” The next 12 months: the snowball 1:34:22 β€” Final remarks Enjoy🍿
