What happens when a community needs a welder, but skilled young people lack the equipment to start a business?
At @WindleUganda , we believe skills should open doors to opportunity. Through the I-UPSHIFT project, we mentor young people, support them to develop solutions to community needs and provide seed capital to help turn their ideas into viable enterprises.
Skills are powerful. Skills that solve problems and generate income can transform futures.

In Kiryandongo Refugee Settlement, adults are returning to the classroom to strengthen their English literacy and communication skills, opening up new opportunities to participate, connect and navigate everyday life with greater confidence.
Through our English for Adults Programme, Windle International Uganda is supporting 433 Sudanese refugees at Bidong and Ematong Learning Centres.
And the goal goes beyond learning English. It is about helping people communicate, integrate, access employment opportunities and pursue livelihoods and businesses.
Because when people can communicate with confidence, more doors can open.

For Esther Ropani of Imvepi Secondary School, a bicycle has made it easier to balance the three-kilometre journey to school with household responsibilities.
Her story reflects a wider effort by Windle International Uganda, which has supported learners with over 500 bicycles to help address long and sometimes unsafe journeys to school.
Every kilometre made easier is an opportunity to save time and energy for learning.

A school meal can change more than just a hungry day.
For many children, being ready to learn begins with having enough to eat.
54,516 learners continue to be reached through school feeding, while school attendance increased from 84% to 91%.
Behind every number is a child better supported in attending, participating, and learning.

For young people, a skill can be the beginning of a much bigger journey.
Across our programmes, 1,000+ young people accessed vocational, technical and market-relevant training aligned with labour market needs and emerging opportunities.
From construction, tailoring and agriculture to hospitality, ICT, electrical installation, welding and other trades, the focus is on skills that can be put to work.
Career readiness, workplace preparation, entrepreneurship and exposure to remote and digital work opportunities strengthen the pathway from learning to earning.
Because a skill is not the destination, it is what that skill makes possible.

A learner finding support to stay in school. A young person gaining skills for the world of work. A community creating better opportunities.

Through the #WeWorkUG Project in Kampala and Wakiso, young people are gaining practical, market-relevant skills that respond to opportunities in the world of work.
From baking and other hands-on training, the focus goes beyond simply acquiring a skill. It is about building competencies that young people can apply, develop and use to pursue employment, enterprise and greater self-reliance.
Because a practical skill can be the beginning of something bigger.

We value the opportunity to engage with the Honourable Minister on two priorities central to Uganda’s development: quality education and youth empowerment.
At Windle International Uganda, we remain committed to strengthening pathways from education and skills to opportunity for refugees and host communities across Uganda.
We look forward to building on this shared commitment through stronger partnerships that expand opportunities for young people, strengthen communities and contribute to a more inclusive and resilient Uganda.
Today, I hosted a delegation from @WindleUganda , led by Executive Director Andrew Omara and Programmes Manager Julius Ocen.
Our discussion focused on education and youth empowerment. Since 1996, Windle has significantly expanded access to quality education for refugees and host communities across Uganda. In addition to supporting 69 schools in the West Nile and Karamoja sub-regions, they implement school feeding programs and agricultural initiatives aimed at boosting school retention and strengthening local food security.
I was pleased to learn about their efforts to address youth unemployment in West Nile, Western Uganda, and Greater Kampala. Through strategic partnerships, Windle equips young people with practical skills, scholarships, and job placements.
We look forward to deepening this partnership to drive sustainable impact and empower our people to become productive citizens.

For young people everywhere, the aspirations are familiar: decent work, opportunity, inclusion, innovation and a chance to build a better future.
In Rhino Camp, Martin Wani Santino and the Allah Karim Business Group are turning innovation into livelihoods, developing a community milling enterprise while diversifying into poultry, retail and piggery.
Their journey, supported through I-UPSHIFT under the @IloProspects Partnership, shows what young people can achieve when ideas are matched with skills, mentorship and opportunity.
This #InternationalYouthDay, we celebrate young people as innovators, entrepreneurs and contributors to their communities.

As we look forward to #InternationalYouthDay2026 tomorrow, we reflect on some of the ways we build bridges between young people and opportunity.
In Kiryandongo, vocational skills development and start-up support are helping young Sudanese refugees turn skills into livelihoods and move closer to their aspirations for employment, entrepreneurship and self-reliance.
Different contexts. Common aspirations.
These are some of the ways we build bridges.
