Today I remember, Patsy Gillespie, and from the 1st Battalion, The King's Regiment: Lance Corporal Stephen Burrows, Kingsman Stephen Beacham, Kingsman David Sweeney, Kingsman Paul Worrall, and Vincent Scott. I also remember the young barely out of his teens, platoon commander who found himself firing his 9mm at the door to the ops room as the IRA fired through the door from the other side. An armoured door, and his pistol rounds simply bounced back into the room. The October 24, 1990 attack on the permanent vehicle checkpoint (VCP2) at Coshquin on the Buncrana Road outside Londonderry (Derry) was a Provisional IRA "proxy bomb" (or human bomb) operation. The Attack Details • Date: October 24, 1990, at approximately 4:00 AM. • Location: Coshquin permanent vehicle checkpoint (VCP) on the Buncrana Road near the border with County Donegal, Ireland. • Perpetrator: Provisional IRA (Derry City Brigade). • Method: The IRA abducted Patrick "Patsy" Gillespie—a 42-year-old Catholic civilian cook who worked at the Fort George British Army base—while holding his family hostage at gunpoint. He was forced into a van loaded with roughly 750 to 1,000 pounds (450–450+ kg) of homemade explosives. • Detonation: As Gillespie reached the search bay of the checkpoint and tried to open the door to warn the soldiers, the bomb detonated (triggered via a mechanism linked to the van's interior courtesy light and a backup timer). Casualties and Damage • Fatalities (6 total): • Patrick Gillespie (civilian forced driver) • Five soldiers from the 1st Battalion, The King's Regiment: Lance Corporal Stephen Burrows, Kingsman Stephen Beacham, Kingsman David Sweeney, Kingsman Paul Worrall, and Vincent Scott. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them.

These are the five greatest achievements of the British. One small island explained gravity, made war on the slave trade, built the machine age, gave the world its common language and governed the largest empire in history. 5. Science. Newton's laws, published in 1687, steered Apollo 11 to the Moon 282 years later. Faraday gave us electricity. Darwin explained life. Fleming's penicillin has saved an estimated 200 million lives. 4. Killing the slave trade. No great power had ever made war on it — until Britain. The Royal Navy boarded the slavers with cutlass and pistol, seized around 1,600 ships and freed 150,000 Africans. 3. The Industrial Revolution. Watt's engine, Arkwright's factory, Stephenson's railway, Brunel's iron ship. By 1850, one island made around half the world's iron and two-thirds of its coal. 2. The English language. 1.5 billion speakers. Every pilot on an international route must be certified in it. When the world talks to itself, it talks in ours. 1. The largest empire in human history. A quarter of the world's land. Parliaments, trial by jury and the common law — and when the British went home, nation after nation kept them. They did not wait for the world to change. They went out and changed it. Be proud to be British. Our ancestors gave the world all five. Our children are rarely taught one of them with pride. I'm changing that, one story at a time, and I can't do it alone. Stand with me as a Guardian: thestoicenglish.com/guardian…

English eccentricity is alive and well. Even when our politicians go insane....
Parents should not face up to five years in prison for refusing to accept that their child identifies as a cat. A human child cannot be a cat. End of the matter. We are not a serious country at the moment.

RE: $GRSD, naturally people get curious before earnings and start asking questions, especially with the recent share price movement we have seen. This earnings cycle there has been speculation that the lack of news from the company is negative. The company simply didn't have a lot of news in Q3 and since the end of Q3 the company has been in a blackout period which prevents executives from commenting publicly prior to earnings, and, quite obviously, prevents all insiders from trading, whether buying or selling. This policy has not changed since the IPO. Earnings are after market on the 19th at which point we can talk and trade more freely.

The British Empire was the greatest work of human civilisation this world has ever seen. It outlawed the slave trade and then hunted it to extinction across every ocean on earth. It put the rule of law on six continents. It built the railway, the telegraph, the modern world. And when it left, India, Canada, Australia and fifty more kept the lot. That is not conquest. That is inheritance. A quarter of the land on earth. A quarter of the people. Run from one wet island. Now ask what it did with that reach. Not what it took. What it built. It built the law. Around a third of the world's people live under legal systems descended from English common law. The presumption of innocence. Trial by jury. A judge who can rule against the government and keep his job. It built the machine age. The first intercity railway. The cable that joined Europe and America. By 1902 a telegraph ring circled the entire world, landing only on British soil. It built the knowledge. Newton. Darwin. Faraday. Turing. Berners-Lee. The machine you are reading this on is, from the physics up, a British invention with foreign parts. And it built a war on the slave trade. No great power had ever made war on the trade — until Britain did. Sixty years. Around 1,600 ships seized. Around 150,000 Africans freed. Around 2,000 British sailors dead doing it. Then the thing that proves the case. Every empire before it ended in fire. This one chose to go — and the nations it freed kept the lot. The courts. The parliaments. The language. Then they formed a club with the country that had ruled them. Fifty-six members. Four of them were never British at all. Former French and Portuguese colonies asked to join. Nobody applies to join the empire of a tyrant. Was it perfect? No empire is. Fine. Now name the empire that did better. Name the one that bled for sixty years to end the slave trade. Name the one whose former subjects kept its courts. Name the one that packed up and went home. There is one. Nobody keeps the chains of a master. They keep the gifts of a builder. Fifty-six nations kept them. That is the verdict — and it was not ours. It was theirs. Others apologise for our history. I tell it — properly, from the record, without the guilt. If this wasn't so ludicrous it would be police state stuff Absolutely appalling
🚨 A 15-year-old boy was woken by four West Midlands Police officers banging on his door. Fraser, a schoolboy and Reform UK activist, was arrested in front of his neighbours, bundled into a police car and held overnight in a cell. His mugshot and DNA were taken; even his shoes were confiscated. While he was in the cell, officers searched his bedroom at home. His “crime”? Criticising a Conservative councillor for wearing shorts and a T-shirt to a council meeting, then joking on social media that the councillor “was not looking like a rent boy” when he wore a suit. Fraser also posted an altered photograph of the councillor wearing bunny ears. In what self-respecting democracy should a child be arrested for criticising an elected politician? The Free Speech Union is supporting Fraser and has taken on his case. His lawyers received an email from West Midlands Police stating that “it is alleged that your client’s comments could be considered a hate crime offence”. Months later, Fraser is still waiting to learn whether he will be charged. Speaking to the New York Post, FSU Director of Legislative Affairs Sam Armstrong said: “Broadly speaking, several thousand people a year are being arrested for… ‘offensive speech’ in the UK.” Since 2020, the FSU has handled more than 7,000 cases involving people whose free speech has been infringed and who have been punished for exercising it. More than 60,000 people have also been arrested for communications offences in the UK. The First Amendment protects US citizens’ right to free speech. As Sam told the New York Post, it is the “global gold standard”. Read more below 👇

EXCLUSIVE: A new study finds that political prediction market traders are not representative of all voters, but election market prices are more accurate than leading poll-based methods and not politically biased. The study found: ✅ In its first month of listing election contracts in 2024, Kalshi's prices beat every poll-based forecast (Silver Bulletin, FiveThirtyEight, The Economist) in the national race, all seven battleground states, and 19 Senate races ✅ A trader who believed the poll-based models and traded against Kalshi's national price would have lost 92 to 100 cents per dollar. ✅ No poll-based forecast would have been profitable to trade against Kalshi in any group of presidential contests. 💰 @Kalshi's 2024 election traders were 86% male and half were under 30. 🏠 Their home zip codes voted 28% for Trump. A market that priced its traders' politics would have leaned toward Harris, not Trump. Instead, 60% of the money went to Republican positions, and Kalshi priced Trump as the favorite through the final month. 🔢 The study used data from @Kalshi in 2024, @PredictIt in 2016, and New York betting markets from 1884 to 1940. ✍️The study was authored by @HarryDCrane, Professor of Statistics at @RutgersU and member of @CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee & @KolemanStrumpf, Burchfield Presidential Chair of Political Economy, Department of Economics, @WakeForest University.
