The Alberta MOU isn’t just about pipelines and emissions. Real projects are at risk — worth tens of billions of dollars. Any further delay increases the risk that those dollars — and the jobs they’d create — stay on pause. ➡️ We crunched the numbers: buff.ly/Y9I4zXB

Happy Genesee #1 retirement day to all who celebrate! As of this morning, Alberta (officially*) has one operational coal power plant. *It's been offline since April 8, but was finally removed from the AESO current supply & demand page

Interesting patterns developing where wind and solar output depresses hourly pool prices in Alberta. Wind graphic divided into 3 equal 2900-hr blocks. Even though average 2023 prices were much higher than 2020, pattern shows solar duck curve arriving in Alberta.

With nearly 1,700 megawatts of new capacity added in the last year, Alberta now has the second largest wind 🌬 fleet in Canada. This is over 1/4 of all wind capacity in the country.

💰📈 Renewables made Southern Alberta municipalities $28 million in tax revenues in 2022—a number that could grow by an additional $250 million "in just a few years," finds @BRC_Canada. "That’s what we’re worried about the moratorium jeopardizing.” #ableg calgaryherald.com/business/s…

And as this @Pembina report shows, building a clean grid would help save Albertans more than $600 per household in electricity costs. Let's work together on creating cleaner air and good jobs. pembina.org/pub/zeroing-in

"Alberta's shown we can do this." @Pembina's Binnu Jeyakumar tells #RealTalkRJ the story of Stephen Harper's 2012 coal phase-out, the free market's response, and why she's confident Alberta can achieve a #NetZero grid by 2035. 👀 youtube.com/live/ddSVHbYFqLE… #abpoli #cdnpoli ⚡️

"Alberta accounted for the lion’s share—75%—of Canada’s utility-scale #Wind and #Solar capacity growth in 2022," writes CanREA's Evan Wilson. "Alberta is enjoying well-regulated growth, rooted in strong policies and robust community engagement practices." ow.ly/GoLT50OooQm

Check out our latest report! It has: ☑️Affordable electricity bills ☑️Economic development opportunities ☑️Increased energy exports ☑️A call for a made-in-Alberta plan But most importantly, it also has: ☑️An 18-page appendix for my fellow nerds🤓
🆕📃 NEW REPORT: “Zeroing In: Pathways to an affordable net-zero grid in Alberta” Our latest report explores scenarios that demonstrate how Alberta can decarbonize its grid by 2035 in a cost-effective and reliable manner. pembina.org/pub/zeroing-in

As Alberta begins to thaw, solar power continues to overtake coal during peak sunlight hours, even with both coal plants running at full capacity!

Since February 27 - the first day solar overtook coal this year - solar has had a higher output that coal for a total of 55 hour (and counting!)

Even though this is only happening during 'peak' sunlight, solar managed to beat out coal for 8 hours in a single day - and it's only March.

Thanks @bcshaffer and @S_HastingsSimon for checking out the data! This was my take on the size (physical and capacity) of turbines over the years - a little sneak peek of a paper that I wrote with @TimWeisAB, @andrew_leach, and Dr. Brian Fleck.
With a hat-tip to @S_HastingsSimon, seems there's some fun new data on wind turbines in Canada (with location data too!) Here are a couple quick takes from the data. First, wind plants are getting taller. [1/3]
