After long journey, this work finally came out. Back to 2017 (or maybe even earlier), I predicted this type of CTC-CTC' stacks are impossible to make due to metathesis (and we didn't discuss its feasibility in the Chem. Rev. review). Now, we have a bunch of that!

We demonstrate CTC@CTC’ stacked pairs w intertrimer coordinate-covalent bonding (d(Ag–Au) 2.868(2) Å; ΔE > 50 kcal/mol, an order of magnitude > aurophilic bonding). CTC@CTC’ pairs remain intact/strongly-bound even in solution (Keq > 10^5 L/mol via NMR/UV-vis) & gas phase (MS).
