As a Saudi woman, your life feels as though it stops the moment you enter adolescence, whether you've reached puberty or not. You can't go out for a walk, visit a café, or go anywhere without explicit permission. A young woman exhausts herself just trying to convince her family to let her go to a café for a single hour simply to sit with a friend she has known since kindergarten. Yet even then, she is vilified and sexualized by both society and her family. They constantly ask, 'Why do you want to go?' But no matter the answer, it will never satisfy them, because they simply cannot bear to see a woman comfortable or happy, no matter how trivial the moment is.
Moreover, there are hardly any dedicated spaces for women other than cafés. As a result, going out just to grab a cup of coffee has been unnecessarily sexualized, simply because it’s the only accessible outlet. Forced gender segregation only deepens social ignorance and fuels unnatural hostility between the sexes.
While the law on paper now grants women many of their rights, societal opposition makes actually obtaining and exercising those rights extraordinarily difficult. Despite all these persistent restrictions, men often deny both the present reality and past experiences, pointing to a few newly established spaces to project a modern and open-minded image to the world a narrative that feels completely fabricated.
While women-only gyms and sports venues have indeed opened recently, their prices are astronomically high. The 'pink tax' is applied to almost everything here; even male students pay less for university housing compared to female students. On top of that, families and society restrict women from going out or pursuing what they want, largely driven by an obsession with virginity. Every right or freedom is framed as a threat to a woman's purity just as they once claimed about driving, alleging it was religiously forbidden, harmed female reproductive health, or risked virginity.
Yet historically, Muslim women rode horses and camels without any of these irrational notions. These extreme mindsets have distorted both women's lives and the perception of Islam, all while the underlying reality continues to be denied.
