Half of Missouri adults have held medical debt at some point in the last five years, according to new report. Most of them — 78% of those under age 65 — had health insurance at the time they received the care that sent them into debt. missouriindependent.com/2024… @MO_Independent

Contrary to popular belief, a new @commonwealthfnd report finds Americans see docs less often & have among the lowest rate of practicing physicians & hospital beds per 1,000 population, when compared to international peers. And we're (still) paying more! buff.ly/3WSWsQH

36% of counties in the US are #MaternalCare deserts, according to a new study. These areas are most common in the Midwest & South. This lack of maternal care is disproportionally impacting #Rural women and people of color, leading to worse health outcomes npr.org/2022/10/12/112833556…

The requirement that Medicaid keep people continuously covered during the public health emergency has increased enrollment by 17.7 million. When the emergency is declared over, millions could lose coverage and it will be a really, really big deal. kff.org/medicaid/issue-brief…

Child poverty, long a source of national shame, has plunged nearly 60 percent over the past generation, largely due to safety net expansions. Ronald Reagan's quip--we fought a war on poverty "and poverty won"--appears obsolete. Details (w/@ChildTrends): nytimes.com/2022/09/11/us/po…

Amazing to see a nearly $1.8 million investment in Missouri's health clinics to achieve #healthequity through #data. Having sub-county level data that is timely and accurate is vital to optimizing our public health response, now and in the future. hhs.gov/about/news/2022/08/0…

It looks like Democrats are on their way to giving the government the authority to negotiate the prices of certain drugs in Medicare and enhancing ACA affordability. This would be the biggest health reform since passage of the ACA itself over 12 years ago.

When the Missouri Gun Violence Project started, we thought we understood how much of a crisis gun violence is. But two years of reporting later, we not only proved ourselves wrong, but also realized how far behind news organizations are on accurately covering the issue.🧵@KCStar
