Do you know about the fascinating mathematical ideas behind post-quantum cryptography? I wrote about how Australia should be training more people with deep mathematical skills for PQC: Mind-bending maths could stop quantum hackers, but few understand it theconversation.com/mind-ben…

In fault-tolerant quantum computers, physical circuits implement encoded logical operations. Typically, the bulk of these physical circuits are syndrome extraction circuits, such as this one for the surface code.
This makes them a key target for noise characterisation!

A thread about conical intersections.
When the pandemic started, all the experimentalists, including Jacob Whitlow and Zhubing Jia, were kicked out of lab. I suggested that Jacob and Gloria think about whether or not we could simulate conical intersections with our ion traps.

📰Paper alert!
"Direct observation of geometric phase in dynamics around a conical intersection"
Geometric phases are counterintuitive and affect the outcomes of chemical reactions, but have never been directly observed... until now!

I discovered quantum optics through Roy Glauber's 1964 Les Houches lectures when I was a first year graduate student, and it change the course of my PhD. It's one of the finest pieces of scientific writing I've ever read. He continues to be an inspiration.
Roy Glauber 1925-2018. Glauber's quantum theory of optical coherence set the stage for a plethora of advances in quantum optics over the past half century. His light still shines bright.
