I’m reminiscing on this Saturday night in October. I did not realize it’s been eight years since the last Oktoberfest in the big tent at Alpine Village in Torrance, Ca had happened. This was the oldest Oktoberfest in California and it was a special occasion every year. I miss these times. The friends, the strangers, the food, the songs. The Chicken Dance! Alpine Village closed. Land sold is the simplest answer as to why.

What once was, is no more. Smilin' Jack is the world's largest Jack-O'-Lantern, created by painting a massive 3.3-million-gallon spherical storage tank at the Phillips 66 oil refinery in Wilmington, California. Every year for Halloween you could drive up, take pictures and receive free caramel popcorn. This has been going on since 1952. 2025 was the last year due to another refinery closure in California.
