Auroras tonight: Maps show swathes of US to be bathed in northern lights newsweek.com/auroras-tonight… @petertgallagher @DIAS_Dublin @DIASAstronomy

Look north in the coming nights and you may spot the #NorthernLights 👀
A coronal mass ejection from the sun is earth bound and whilst there's some uncertainty on its arrival time, sightings of the #aurora are likely in northern areas with a slight chance in the south too

🚨High Solar Activity🚨
✨An X1.8 flare was detected on Oct 9, peak @01:56 UTC
📻A type II radio emission also detected, starting @01:44 UTC, Oct 9
🔭A halo CME, most likely related to this flare was detected in LASCO/C2 data ~02:30 UTC on Oct 9
🎆SEP event captured by NGRM proton data ~04:00 UTC on Oct 9

🚨Recent solar activity🚨
💥X9.0 solar flare detected @12:18 UTC on Oct 03 (currently the strongest flare of this solar cycle as observed by GOES) accompanied by a halo CME @12:48 UTC.
Consequences: The CME is currently predicted to arrive at 🌍 from late on Oct 5th, with the potential to trigger moderate to strong 📈geomagnetic disturbances.

Excited to share that the MIDA group joined the 6th Dolomites Workshop (DWCAA24)! 🏔️ We hosted a mini-symposium on AI, Approximation & Inverse Problems in space weather, plus Michele Piana's plenary on solar physics☀️ and a talk on brain network estimation. 🧠
Looking forward to chatting about @ARCAFF_EU and @SolarMonitororg with #spaceweather colleagues @UKSWSE_Meeting this week! 🌞
We are underway with this year's UKSWSW II Meeting in Exeter. So far, some great insights from @MetOfficeSpace, @energygovuk, and @transportgovuk into Space Weather and the planning for its impacts on the UK. @iop_conferences @RAL_Space_STFC @BJSSLtd @spacegovuk

Hosted @NWSSWPC Space Weather Scales Workshop @DIAS_Dublin this week with reps from European power grids, space agencies, gov departments, weather agencies. Focus was on improving reporting of solar & geomagnetic conditions for aviation, power, navigation, communications, etc.
We are delighted to host a workshop on revising the space weather scales in Dublin this week! It gives us a great opportunity to speak to a variety of users about the development of our classification and forecasting systems 🌞

Huge congrats to the DIAS SunPy team @samaloney and @drsophiemurray on being part of a NASA Group Award. Also to DIAS Adjunct @esa @laura_hayess. @SunPyProject is transforming how solar physicists access and analyse data from ground- and space-based instruments.

annnndd.... it's back 👀 NOAA AR 3664 making its presence known (after rotating the backside of the ☀️) with an X2.9 flare✨
🟢Peak 07:08 UT
This same AR was responsible for the largest flare of the solar cycle & lots of previous activity! As they come back around we may be in store for more #SpaceWeather

Boom! The largest solar flare of this solar cycle is currently in progress. An X8.8 from sunspot group 3664 just as it rotates off the disc. Complex solar radio bursts also detected by @LOFARIreland.

It’s important to remember that although active region 3664 *did* produce 10 X-class solar flares, only half (5) of these would have classified as X-class under the pre-2020 calibration. The benchmark for the strongest flare class has changed significantly (lowered by 30%)!

🎆WHAT A WEEKEND🎆
We've been absolutely stunned with all the #northernlights photos spamming our feeds from all over Europe... I think we got as good a show as the astronauts in space?😜
We're still looking into the responses to the event on the ESA #SpaceWeather Portal, so look out for some highlights to come✨👀

🌌 What a show! Over the weekend, many people in Europe enjoyed the spectacular display of the aurora borealis dancing above their heads.
👨🚀 This is how @esa astronauts have seen the Earth's sky lighting up from space – a magical thread from the International @Space_Station. 🧵
