肺がん治療薬・イレッサをめぐる報道で、私はニュース番組をクビになった。
当時、メディアで唯一、イレッサの有効性にEGFR遺伝子変異が関係していたことを報道した結果、
国賠訴訟を行っていた原告や弁護団にBPOに申立てされ、取材に問題があるディレクターと烙印を押されたからである。
この時、同時進行で胃がんのバリウム検査について取材していた。早期発見には不向きなこと、検診組織の利権構造で廃止にならない検診が、漫然と続いていたのだ。
毎年バリウム検査を受けているのに、胃がんが進行した状態で見つかり、命を落とすという不条理が、現実に起きていた。検診利権のために、こんな事が許されていいはずがない。
バリウム検査の実態を多くの人に伝えたいと思っていたが、BPOでディレクター失格の烙印を押された私の企画提案は、他局の報道番組で相手にされなかった。
そんな時、週刊ポストの若い編集者が横浜まで会いにきてくれて、バリウム検査についての調査報道を提案してくれた。
だが、踏み込んだ報道をすれば、検診組織からの反発やトラブルは避けられない。そのことを伝えると、若い編集者は笑顔でこう言った。

現在、イレッサは進行肺がんの治療薬として重要な存在となっている。
