Politicians have to take responsibility for trivialising violence and normalising aggression.

Absolute fire here from Monique Ryan:
“She is a negative force in Australian politics.”
For decades Pauline Hanson has been platformed and legitimised despite the racism, bigotry and division.
If you’re going to give her the platform and the reach, then hold her to account.

With respect, Jessica, you’re Channel 10’s state political reporter. Surely reporting Pickering’s denial without mentioning his previous statements or One Nation’s published abortion policy is a fairly significant omission.
In 2022, Pickering advocated reducing the abortion gestational limit to 12 weeks. In 2024, he attended an anti-abortion rally and described Victoria’s abortion laws as “some of the most draconian on the planet”.
And today, One Nation’s own website explicitly commits to rolling back abortion laws.
Surely the job of political journalism is to scrutinise what politicians say, not simply reproduce it.

🔴 #BREAKING OPEN POLL LAUNCHES: MAINSTREAM MEDIA DOES NOT SPEAK FOR YOU, SO WE BUILT OPENPOLL TO TAKE BACK OUR VOICE 👇SHARE THIS EVERYWHERE 👇 🔴
For years a handful of legacy pollsters, most of them paid by the same media companies that report their numbers, have told Australia what it thinks from small sample groups, drip feeding us figures that feel completely disconnected from the damage done to this country, while millions of hard-working Australians have never been asked for their view.
OpenPoll changes that with a powerful, live weekly poll that puts the power directly back into your hands, free for every Australian in every state and territory.
One verified mobile phone per person stops bots, fake accounts and duplicate voting dead in their tracks, with no secret weighting, no hidden sample groups or political manipulation.
You number your ballot just like the real paper, and the results count your preferences the way the electoral commission does, so you can see who would actually win the two-party count, not just who leads on first votes.
The federal vote, the preferred Prime Minister, your Premier and every seat in the Victorian election are counted live, with a map that colours in seat by seat as the votes come in and a page for your own seat showing exactly how it is voting.
Take back control, cast your vote and demand the truth.

Yes.
Liberals are promising to repair the budget while committing billions in new spending, and cutting taxes.
They claim most of it ($22bn) will be paid through public service jobs freezes - but the number is only reachable if they lay off about 54% of the public service.
Meanwhile the things they’re spending the billions on are inadequate. For example, the Auditor General’s Office says it’ll cost $12bn+ over 4 years to address potholes - the Liberals are promising $5bn (which is less than the $1.39bn per year ($5.56bn over four years) Labor is currently spending).
The biggest change will be the new government will be Liberal relying on One Nation votes in parliament to pass anything.
It’s going to be a four year shitshow - almost certainly worse than the Baillieu/Napthine era.

For someone who earns so much from speaking fees, what a shit take Hughesy.
She was PM for 5 years, earning ~$400k AUD/yr salary - a fraction of what you earned running a radio show, not running a country…
As a former world leader, she now can earn a 6-figure speakers fee - kinda like how people normally pay you 5-figures per event as a speakers fee…
…yet you somehow fail to disclose your celebrity keynotes at Liberal events as an in-kind donation?
Why is that?
If other comedians can remember to disclose their in-kind donations on the VEC register - like Tom Ballard’s $1,200 contribution to The Greens below - why can’t you?
Do you lack integrity? Or are you doing something special that means you shouldn’t disclose?

The Law That Only Looks Down
More and more, democratic institutions themselves, courts, parliaments, international bodies, are treated as instruments of power rather than constraints upon it, as the multilateral system is dismantled.
The clearest recent admission came from Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, whose
comments are worth reproducing. At Davos this year he conceded that international law is“applied with varying rigour depending on the identity of the accused”, and that the rules-based order had always been a useful fiction the powerful set aside whenever it suited them.
And yet even as the tectonic plates of global alliances shift, as American hegemony wanes and the Global South finds its voice, Australia still clings publicly to the pretence.
There is a structural reason the law bends toward power. The one body able to adjudicate peace, the UN Security Council, was built with a lock. Five nations, the victors of a war that ended eighty years ago, hold a permanent seat and a veto.
And these five are most often among those accused of the gravest crimes. We built a court over the powerful, then handed them the only key.
But we do know the law can reach the powerful.
An International Criminal Court warrant is
outstanding for Vladimir Putin, for the abduction and genocide of Ukrainian children, and for Benjamin Netanyahu, for crimes against humanity and the war crime of starvation in Gaza.
But a warrant is not justice, and the most powerful perpetrators still run free.
In contrast, Rodrigo Duterte stands trial for the killings of his so-called “war on drugs,” a crime identical to what the Trump administration is now doing to Venezuelans, extrajudicial military killings without due process, evidence or rights.
When other major powers see a disintegrating system of prohibitions and rules, and that aggression can be launched with impunity at any moment, the world can only become far less safe.
The United States, which drove the tribunals for Rwanda and Yugoslavia and called the warrant for Putin justified, refuses to accept the same standards for itself, or its closest allies.
Nearly every person the ICC has tried has come from the Global South, not because atrocity lives only there, but because that is usually the only place the law is allowed to reach.
Some escape through
the veto, like China for its persecution of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang.
Others are charged but
never surrendered, like Netanyahu.
But one is never even named.
Article 7 promised that all are equal before the law.
But the law cannot mean one thing in Moscow and another in Washington, and still preach equality.
As Carney so eloquently laid bare.

Dave Hughes has repeatedly shown that checking things first isn’t really his thing. On its own, that’s embarrassing.
But it matters much more when he’s directing 500,000 followers towards conspiracy claims and a site soliciting donations on the back of them.

Have you listened to the @BikeBoyScandal?
It’s a true crime podcast that’s had around a million downloads. It provides details of a car accident involving your former @VictorianLabor leader Dan Andrews, whose statue has just been cancelled by the new Premier, who watched Dan’s work for ten years, and said “Integrity won’t be optional’ now.
In it we discover through a number of witnesses of the saga that either Dan or his wife were driving a Vic Govt owned Ford Territory SUV, they claim it was her, when they turned a corner and collided with a 15yo boy on a bike, and it left the lad lying on the road, bleeding profusely, screaming in agony, barely clinging to life. Witnesses say Dan and his wife initially stood away from the boy yelling at each other. It took Dan six and a half minutes to make a call to 000. The boy was eventually emergency airlifted to hospital. The police closest to the scene say in the podcast they were called away as they were about to arrive. They weren’t told why. The police who did eventually attend didn’t breathalyse Dan and his wife. No one, apart from them, knows why.
Dan’s story changed from ‘We hit a kid’ on that 000 call, to a later media interview where he said ‘The kid T boned us’? If so, how did the front windscreen get damaged? Dan got it replaced within 24 hours. Why weren’t any neighbours interviewed? Why was the first person to render assistance to the possibly dying child, not Dan and his wife?
No investigation was done and Dan’s car left the scene very soon after.
And when the kid finally got out of hospital, the police visited him, not to get his version of the accident, but to tell him he’s lucky they don’t charge him with causing the collision, so he should be quiet about it.
That police stance added fresh trauma to the 15yo. Thirteen years later he hasn’t recovered, physically or mentally, His dad says it ruined his son’s life.
All this info is detailed in the podcast. It’s had close to million downloads. Dan’s lawyers haven’t got it taken down.
A few months after this incident Dan became Victorian Premier and is now often standing beside his old roommate, our current
PM Anthony Albanese, as they discuss getting hold of the Australian people’s hard earned trillions in superannuation.
Go hassle Dan instead of me John. He’s made you all look terrible by association,

Two events in Kew yesterday.
One substantially larger than the other.
I get the sense the first-term Opposition Leader has a real fight on her hands…
Independent @Sophie__Torney is starting much earlier, drawing much larger crowds, and raised more grassroots money than at the same point 2022.
At that election, she only narrowly missed winning, needing just ~1628 votes to shift.
Recent results are positive for her. Kew voted independent for a second term at the 2025 Federal Election, and elected a heavily independent council in 2024 - with only 1 Liberal-linked councillor remaining.
Meanwhile, Sophie has since served as Mayor of Boroondara - and Chair of the Accountability Round Table, where she advocated for the strengthening of IBAC.
The significance of the two events can’t be overstated though.
The Opposition Leader’s numbered 36 (and included the star power of her former boss, the former Federal Treasurer).
But Sophie Torney’s reportedly had ~200 at this event - and reportedly ~400 at a recent town hall on IBAC with Geoffrey Watson SC and Hawthorn Independent / Deputy Mayor @ShimaIbuki
Both represent far more than the ~100 that Opposition leader attracted to her Western Victoria launch in Geelong last weekend (despite a celebrity comedian drawcard) - with her 36 on par with the numbers One Nation attracted to Hawthorn recently.
For the Opposition Leader, it points to a battle on three fronts - in Labor seats statewide, in rural and outer metro seats defending against One Nation, and in her own seat in a fight for political survival in a community demanding better standards from both major parties.
Although I’m cheering for Sophie, I’m also on the edge of my seat to see how the Opposition manages this 3-way campaign dilemma - which could deliver a Liberal/One Nation coalition government, but ultimately fail to elect its leader.
(As you can see, the current solution seems to suggest the Liberals feel confident enough in Kew to avoid campaigning at scale - ironically, the same mistake made by the Federal Treasurer in the same area when he lost to an independent in 2022.)
Anyway, here’s where to read about Sophie Torney, support her, or donate:
