The argument is incorrect, though, as it makes the same error, at scale, as those economists who classify various locally irrational behaviors as globally irrational, despite their adaptive advantages. Narrow maximization over abstract value representation is not long-term adaptive—it induces fragility. Most remain blind to this issue because the maladaptive characteristics play out on timescales to which we’re insensitive. Essentially, this asymmetric insensitivity is what generates Moloch traps, and to champion the sacrifice of all value forms to “capital efficiency” amounts to a cult of ratcheting time preference that ends with the consumption of Life by Machine. Of course, those who seek the sacrifice see no distinction between Life and Machine, as they’ve been trained for the last three centuries to see reality through the Analytic lens, which in the limit admits as real only those aspects of reality we can (pretend to) control by way of systems resting on deterministic foundations.
