Russia's overnight strike on Ukrainian energy infrastructure knocked out the 400kV Isaccea-Vulcănești line — Moldova's main electricity corridor to Europe. 🧵on some context, why this vulnerability matters, and how Moldova is addressing it:

The “president” of Transnistria Krasnoselsky was decorated by Putin yday. He managed to get to Russia due to talks facilitated by OSCE about winter gas in the region. Chisinau says it will restrict Krasnoselsky’s exit from Moldova for 5 years. Why the exit and not the entrance?

Sad to see Lawler go down, who was a wonderful friend of Moldova. But the Congressional Moldova Caucus is bigger than ever before. Moldova has so many friends on Capitol Hill. Lots of space for folks to hear Moldova's story in the new Congress.
A Moldova dimension to the U.S. midterm elections: Mike Lawler, the Republican co-chair of the Congressional Moldova Caucus, has lost his seat. Lawler is married to a Moldova-born woman. Deborah Ross, the Democratic co-chair, won her reelection bid.

Notable how many vessels bound from Russia to US are sanctioned by EU/UK. said sanctions tend to have less global effect than those under US sanctions. Being bound to US could still divert to other countries, including regular buyers of Russian diesel (Brazil) or of US (Mexico)
BREAKING!! Eight tankers carrying 300,800 tons of Russian diesel are being monitored on potential voyages to the U.S., according to Ukrainian sources. Seven have declared the U.S. as their destination, with arrivals expected from Nov. 7. FULL LIST 👇 1/2

Many lingering mysteries from these transfers. One that lingers: post-2022 transfers of wind tunnel test data for a flying wing design between Chinese land systems major Norinco and Russia's TsAGI. Rosoboronexport was involved, so military use presumed. But what was it for?
Russian defense production is increasingly moving into China, while advanced weapons expertise is flowing both ways. A C4ADS report identified 314 shipments involving 52 Russian suppliers and 21 Chinese recipients from 2010–2025 — United24. 1/

Absolutely. Also important to note that Sandu (and other highly-ranked officials like speaker Igor Grosu) almost always qualify support for RO unification by saying that there is no majority support for it in MD and that EU integration is the priority (deschide.md/maia-sandu-despr…).
To be very clear, this is not a new sentiment for Maia Sandu whatsoever. In this interview, she is doubling down on a nearly 10-month-old comment, which she reaffirmed: - In a January press conference - In an April interview with Le Monde - At the Moldova Security Forum in October

A rough October for Moldova as Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine: 19 airspace violations last month overall, including 6 that resulted in explosions. The figure also shows dates and localities. Now at 104 incidents since 2022. Source here (army.md/index.php/ro/comunic…).

"The Blob" is such a beautiful distillation of the Obama years because it was coined by one of the most powerful people on earth at the literal heart of the national security establishment, whining that a bunch of academics did not see the wisdom of his boss's 5d chess moves (i.e. backpeddaling about letting Assad gas civilians)

Moldovan President Maia Sandu would vote to unite Moldova with Romania. The reason: Russia. Sandu: Russia’s imperialism does not stop in Ukraine. If Russian forces had reached our borders, they would have tried to move forward, European Pravda. 1/

🇧🇪 Belgium’s opposition to using frozen Russian assets to finance Ukraine is increasingly indefensible. Brussels has offered to mutualise the financial risks, but Belgium has failed to specify what guarantees it actually needs. The problem is political, not legal. A thread 1/

Waited until our team crossed the border (back into UA) before commenting on this report, which got me pulled off air yesterday... But viewers should be aware of the perils and pitfalls of reporting from Russian-occupied Ukraine, where information is tightly controlled and independent journalism faces serious constraints.
.@Shelby_Wilder of Newsmax on Russia’s Oleshky stint: “Russia is using this humanitarian operation as a propaganda opportunity. Moscow wants to portray itself as the rescuer of civilians in a city that it occupies, one it has destroyed and plunged into this humanitarian crisis. And we need to be clear, Russia controls what we are going to be allowed to see. Moscow appears to have brought in numerous Russian media compared to just the one American news outlet.”
