As an ice breaker activity on Day 1 this semester, I asked my students to stack identical blocks to see how far they could get the stack to "lean over" without falling. In theory, there is no bound, but in practice it is much more challenging. Here was my attempt.

SoME5 (Summer of Math Exposition 5) results were just announced and my video finished at #2. First time I ever cracked the top 5. This is a good place to find some great math/science content. some.3b1b.co/

Does anyone have experience with microphones that can handle both audible and ultrasonic frequencies? If so, please contact me.

Imagine being on a spacewalk experiencing this. The upper tendrils of Earth's aurora reach high enough that we fly right through them. I felt so small, floating between our planet & the universe, surrounded by this, as we start to permanently leave home. Filmed by @Soph_astro of @esa through the windows of the International Space Station last week.

I've been fully immersed in finishing up a new video. It always takes longer than anticipated, but it should be done within a few days! Here's a visual teaser. Any guesses what this is?

I'm hoping to post the video I've been working on later today. Here's a teaser that makes it clear what this image is.

Two physics majors (both double-majors), who I had the pleasure of teaching, were selected for the top two academic prizes at Dickinson College's graduation yesterday! Congratulations to Carys Chase-Mayoral and and Ella Piergrossi!

In today's class we discussed the Maxwell velocity distribution (MVD). Then I showed a VPython simulation of a gas in which all the particles start with the same speed. After a little while the speed distribution matches the MVD really well (which I always find amazing)!

In case you are not aware (like me), @fyfluiddynamics no longer posts on twitter, but is active on @bluesky as nicolesharp.com. She's essentially starting from scratch, so anyone interested in fluid dynamics should follower her there. P.S. spread the word!

I’m surprised that more people weren’t surprised that it’s possible to see sound waves, so I’m posting this again in case you missed it. Where are all the physicists? Please share if you find this interesting! Is it possible to see sound? youtu.be/SuxUvlgWnWA?si=5i4t… via @YouTube

Is it possible to see sound? The answer turns out to be yes, and my latest video, now out on YouTube, shows exactly how this is accomplished. If you like @veritasium, @3blue1brown, @MarkRober, and @smartereveryday, you're going to love this! The link to the full video follows.
