I just finished Crystal Lake. Feel like my assessment on 9/14 was pretty spot on. The show tipped its cap to the past, all while creating a new path forward. Did I love it? No, I didn’t. But it was the kind of storytelling that younger audiences want. If it helps resurrect the franchise so a new wave of fans can fall in love with this franchise, that’s a good thing. People like me still have our lore, our stories & our films. Let the newer fans have theirs too.
The way I see it? Us long time fans have our established lore. We have our story. Crystal Lake is designed to bring in a new wave of fans. Re-start the franchise for a generation that didn’t see these films on the big screen like we did. If they want to go the Stranger Things route & it gets the franchise going again, I won’t complain. It’s no different than the choose your own adventure narrative Halloween has become, which has allowed that franchise to span across multiple generations. Just get Jason slashing again.

Most devastating death in the franchise. And then Dourif’s reaction to the aftermath? Fuck. Zombie pierced the veil of exploitation into something almost unbearably close to reality.
Danielle Harris on filming her death scene in Rob Zombie’s Halloween II, in her interview for “Horror in Haddonfield”: “I remember laying on the floor there after he cut me up and I’m screaming. Malcolm's character comes in and Brad's character comes in and I'm still laying there and I remember that everybody was trying to cover me up with a towel or a sheet or whatever. I was like, I just wanna be left alone. I just wanna be left here. It was fucking freezing and my teeth are chattering in one of the scenes and I thought, oh God, I'll use this. This is shock. I feel like my body is in shock and this is what happened and this feels really real and it feels really good. It was something that I could sink my teeth into. I wasn't afraid or hesitant to do any of that stuff. I was excited that somebody was giving me the opportunity” Horror in Haddonfield is now available on Amazon: a.co/d/00y8UeBT

One of the saddest deaths in horror history! Danielle Harris, Brad Dourif & Scout Taylor-Compton knock it out of the park with this sequence. It’s so good seeing Rob Zombie’s HALLOWEEN II get reevaluated almost a 2 decades later. 🤘🏻🎃

I’m feeling pretty nervous right now. Nobody besides me has read a word of Book 2. People seem to have enjoyed “Haddonfield”. What about if the follow up isn’t as good? What if I ruin my own momentum? Normal writer insecurities I suppose but they’re keeping me up at night.
Every creative loves to tinker with their work before it’s released. The important part is knowing when you should stop making changes and be done. This week, I’ve had that feeling with Book 2. It’s time to stop making changes & move forward.

One year ago today, @FOX19 was kind enough to run a story about my book signing at Dent Schoolhouse.

I’ve now watched the first 6 episodes of Crystal Lake. I wasn’t too thrilled about the end of episode 5, but I’m reserving judgement until I finish the season. Overall, it still feels like a mixed bag to me. There are things I’m enjoying but I’m not totally enthralled either.

Went and saw Halloween 4 and 5 on the big screen last night at the Esquire. Very cool to see it in theaters with a crowd. Also, there was trivia and ya boi won a cool book “Horror in Haddonfield: The Untold Stories of Halloween,” by Andrew Grevas. #SpookySeason

Listen - Friday the 13th Part 5 and Jason Goes to Hell are two of my favorite films in the series. My opinions will always be somewhat controversial. Whether you love Crystal Lake, hate it or feel indifferent, you’re still a real Friday fan if you say you are. Fuck gatekeeping.

Same goes for Scream, Halloween & every other horror franchise. Nobody gets to decide who the real fans are. We all love what we love & dislike what we dislike. And that’s ok.

Had a great time at the screening of Halloween 4 & 5 last night. My son Jack came with me & we met a ton of horror fans, got to do a Q&A between films & sold some books. Everyone was super impressed with how knowledgeable & well spoken Jack is. He’ll be making the rounds on horror podcasts soon.

My dad wanted to name me Andreas. My mom compromised on Andrew. My last name was significantly shortened at Ellis Island in the early 1900s, when my great grandfather came to America from Greece as a 10 year old. Everyone calls me Grevas in my every day life though.

Halloween Ends writer Paul Brad Logan on the writing process in his interview for “Horror in Haddonfield”: “I think David had ideas from the get go.The way that Halloween Kills was going to be done and then the idea of the third one with Laurie in a different place. We wanted it to be an organic experience. David's so fun to work with. I wish everybody could work with him because writing stuff with him is like a creative playground. Meeting together and brainstorming all of these ideas for what this movie could be was like a three week writers workshop where we just came up with every insane version of this story. Just to see what was going to grab us and what was going to make us have a reason for telling the story. If you're just going to make a movie just to make a movie, it's pointless and people can see through that. Or at least I can and I don't wanna be a part of that. I want to do something I feel good about. I remember once we were brainstorming and David was like “Hey Paul, why don't you go back to your room tonight and write Halloween Ends as if it were Gummo”. So like I did. I only cranked out like 40 or 50 pages, but it was like my version of maybe what Harmony would have done in ‘96 as a follow up to Gummo. It sort of unlocked all these creative ideas and really gets everything moving. It all began with that opening scene, the babysitting scene. Once that happened, then we knew what story we wanted to tell and we got very excited. Then the process moved pretty quickly once we had that first scene. That was sort of our key to unlocking what we wanted the story to be.” Horror in Haddonfield is now available on Amazon: a.co/d/076Bvv6s

Chris Durand’s interview in “Horror in Haddonfield” reads & feels like you’re going to film school. Chris breaks down how stunts were performed in a way that all cinephiles will appreciate.
Chris Durand (Michael in H20) broke down how many of the iconic scenes were filmed in his interview for “Horror in Haddonfield”, including the below excerpt: “I'll give you the analogy. If you're swimming in a small bay somewhere and you see a shark fin go by, that's bad, right? You know what's worse? When you've seen it and then you don't see it anymore. That's what that scene is. She sees me, she knows I'm there. She fumbles, looks back up and I'm gone. She has no idea where I am, which leads me to the next scene, with the lowering down from the ceiling. That was actually an on the spot decision. She’s in the house and goes up the small staircase just before she gets into the room with all the tables. Steve Minor was questioning if I should come from behind or rise up behind her. There were fairly tall ceilings in this place and he looked up and there was a pipe that ran across, just about a foot below the ceiling. He's like, can you fit up there? I was like, I don't know, get a ladder, let's see. Half an hour later that scene was on film.” Horror in Haddonfield is now available on Amazon: a.co/d/0dp8gDKD

I’ve said this for years: Halloween needs an expanded universe TV show but it does not need to involve Michael. Make it an anthology series, with all of the other creepy things that happen on Halloween night. “Season of the Witch” as a TV show. Save Michael for the big screen.
