In microgravity, water doesn’t fall — it floats. A single droplet can become a problem, so we “shower” with soapy towels and rinseless shampoo instead. A lot of people assume months without a real shower must feel terrible. I was surprised how well it actually worked. After a thorough towel bath I felt cleaner and more refreshed than I expected. The body adapts quickly. Living in space taught me I could live with less and still feel good — though there were nights I still dreamed about a hot bath.

I‘ll stop posting timelapses of the aurora from the @Space_Station when I’m tired of looking at them . . . so basically never! Another unforgettable display of this ethereal phenomenon as it danced beneath us last night, this one even more special as it was shared with @astro_anil, as he witnessed it for the first time with such intensity. The red wavelengths (above the green) were particularly bright in this pass.

As an astronaut, If I could change one thing it would be people's perception of spaceflight. I think it is seen too often as a distant, flashy endeavour - cool, but not relevant, and that could not be further from the truth! The science conducted in space leads to medical and technical advancements that benefit everyone. Most people don't realize the ripple effect of space research that sparks innovation, jobs and solutions that range from cancer treatments to your smartphone's camera!

Borders and divisions vanish when you look down on Earth from space, serving as a reminder that we are all part of a global community sharing a common home. As access to space begins to open to a broader audience, I am hopeful we can begin to focus less on our divisions and more on our commonality as human beings.

Love what you've done with the space...
Two women flew on STS-47 in September 1992: @AuburnU alumna Jan Davis (left) and the first African-American woman to go to space, Dr. Mae Jemison. The two crewmates are shown here working on a physiology experiment in the Spacelab laboratory module aboard space shuttle Endeavour.
