Squaresoft released Chrono Cross for PS1 in NA on August 15, 2000. Happy 25th! Kato and Tanaka were adamant that this was not a sequel to Chrono Trigger, thus Cross is best seen as an offshoot or spinoff, and indeed it is a dramatically different game.
