Of everything John Healey announced today, my favourite is the Pension Tax Allowance: a tax break for pensioners worth, at the very most, £94 a year, which exists, according to the Treasury's own guidance, to spare them the "administrative burden" of a letter from HMRC asking for "a relatively small amount of tax". Why would a pensioner living on nothing but the state pension be getting a tax bill at all? Because the personal allowance has been frozen at £12,570 since 2021, Labour has stretched the freeze to 2031, and from next April the full state pension, £13,036.40, sails straight over it. So instead of unfreezing the allowance - the honest thing, the thing you could explain to a child - Healey has built a second allowance on top of the first, to cancel out the damage done by the first, for three years, after which it goes "under review", which is Treasury for "in the bin". And since nothing this Treasury makes is permitted to work cleanly, the thing tapers away. Between £13,037 and £13,319 a year, every extra £3 a pensioner earns costs them £1.60 in tax. That is a marginal rate of 53%. A 70-year-old doing a few hours a week behind a till will hand over a bigger share of each extra pound than a millionaire does on his bonus. Meanwhile a 30-year-old cleaner on exactly the same income, £13,036, will pay £93.28 - the very sum Healey's own guidance waives for the pensioner standing next to her at the bus stop. The freeze costs a full-time worker on the minimum wage £759 a year. Labour signed up to taking that off every one of them until 2031, and today Healey expects applause for handing £94 back to some pensioners, for three years, with an expiry date stamped on the bottom. Progress would end the freeze outright. We would restore the personal allowance to the level it would have reached had it never been frozen, about £15,480 today, lock it to inflation for good, and make any future freeze impossible without a vote of Parliament. One allowance, for everyone, worth having. The pensioner comes out of tax, the cleaner comes out of tax, and HMRC is spared the administrative burden of writing to either of them.

This is a summary of what happened today in Russell Brand’s rape and sexual assault trial. Brand took the witness stand and gave evidence. He admitted that as he became more famous, he allowed his celebrity status to facilitate sexual access to women. He described his past behaviour as “beyond reckless, philandering and idiocy”. He also admitted that sex had been an obsession. 🧵

Portes "Theres a lot of nonsense talked, including on Sky, about the spiralling welfare bill.. as a proportion of our national income.. its lower than it was 15yrs ago & its pretty much back to what it was under Thatcher.. this idea its out of control is just wrong" Spot on!

Obama tonight on his Cheesecake Factory line: "They mobilized a whole of government response to that joke. Not to inflation, but to that joke. The White House even called the Secretary of the Treasury. This is the man who is in charge of the economy. The person who's supposed to be figuring out how to make your life more affordable. The guy who's supposed to be figuring out how to lower inflation. And reduce interest rates. They told him he should hold a press conference in front of the Cheesecake Factory."

I challenge @_GeorgeFinch the leader of Warwickshire County Council @reformparty_uk to play the defence lawyer in the mock trial of @Nigel_Farage. In a democracy, writing books, talking to sixth formers and mocking politicians is OK. But political actors must be open about what they stand for and where their money comes from. @_GeorgeFinch Do you accept the challenge?

How is this statue still at the BBC? What are your thoughts? The artist is Eric Gill. Decades after Gill’s death in 1940, a 1989 biography revealed personal diary entries detailing that he had systematically abused his two eldest daughters, engaged in an incestuous relationship with his sister, and committed sexual acts on his dog. These revelations sparked intense public outrage and repeated calls for the BBC to remove the prominent public artwork.

Well, yesterday was a bit of a shitshow. I fell out of my wheelchair, hurt my foot and landed rather spectacularly on my arse. Not ideal, but hardly worthy of a medical emergency…. except less than ten minutes later, I was unconscious and being blue-lighted into hospital. I know. Whopper. It wasn’t because of my foot, mind you… Nooo. It was my adrenal glands. I have something called #AddisonsDisease which means those two little glands above your kidneys don’t produce cortisol. And if you didn’t know, cortisol is rather bloody important. As in, you literally cannot stay alive without it. So… I take steroids every day to do the job my adrenal glands have apparently resigned from.  The trouble is, when healthy people get injured, ill or stressed, their bodies automatically produce extra cortisol. Mine? Nope… nothing. “You’re on your own, love.” Aaaand suddenly a little tumble becomes a life-threatening adrenal crisis. Blood pressure plummets, consciousness disappears, and without an emergency hydrocortisone injection, things can go very badly wrong rather quickly. But here’the really upsetting part. The life-saving injection we need to use, isn’t ready to use! Nay nay nay… no speedy pen, or pre-filled syringes here. You have to open a little glass ampoule of sterile water, draw the liquid into a syringe, inject it into a separate vial containing powdered hydrocortisone, gently mix and WAIT until the powder dissolves, then draw the medication back into the syringe. After that, you need to fit the appropriate IM needle, prepare the injection site and inject it deep into a muscle, usually your thigh. All whilst vomiting, shaking, and usually losing consciousness.  I mean, who on earth thought that was a sensible idea?! I’ve got to a point now, where I’ve resorted to preparing syringes in advance, despite knowing the risks, and the reduce efficacy… because something is better than nothing. And let’s face it… when you’re partially unconscious, your chemistry skills are somewhat limited. All joking aside though, the sobering reality of this is that research suggests around 1 in 200 people with adrenal insufficiency die from adrenal crisis each and every year. A statistic that should enrage us. I’m not telling you this for sympathy. I’m telling you because we desperately need as much awareness to campaign for safer emergency medication that’s actually easy to administer in an emergency. I was lucky yesterday. I got the treatment I needed, and I’m still here to have a good moan about it. But not everyone gets to tell their story afterwards. I wonder how many people have died with everything they needed to survive sitting right beside them. #AddisonsDisease @AddisonsUK
