A prisoner has been killed while in police custody in Homagama. In this context, the government is introducing two laws that would grant the police even more powers.
Sri Lanka already has the Public Security Ordinance. This is more than sufficient to deal with crime. There is no war in the country today. There is no terrorism either. Yet, under these circumstances, the government is introducing new “anti-terrorism” laws. What is the real agenda behind this move? The JVP once campaigned for the complete abolition of the Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA) and promised the people that it would be abolished. What is the JVP doing today?

A single Facebook comment made in a moment of anger has put 24-year-old Sri Lankan Tamil Hindu engineer Anujan Sivarasa on death row in Saudi Arabia. Unable to bear seeing the god he worships being insulted online, he lost his temper and replied, a mistake that could now cost him his life.
In June, a video went viral showing a Muslim youth kicking Subramani, a dog walking with devotees on the Kataragama Murugan temple pilgrimage. In the online arguments that followed, some people started making vulgar remarks insulting Lord Shiva.
Hurt and provoked, Anujan replied with a comment in Tamil about the Prophet. However, he realized his mistake within minutes, deleted the comment and even posted a public video apologizing for it.
Despite this, extremists in Sri Lanka took a screenshot of his deleted comment, translated it into Arabic and emailed it to his employer in Saudi Arabia to report him. Arrested in July, he was first given 5 years in prison and fined around ₹6.5 crore. But after the prosecution appealed, he was sentenced to death on September 17.
Anujan has been beaten and injured by fellow inmates in prison, and his family hasn't heard from him since September 28, when all phone contact was cut off. His family is living in constant fear. His mother Yogalakshmi's tearful plea to pardon her son and send him back home breaks the heart.
Amnesty International has demanded that this death sentence be cancelled. The final deadline to appeal is October 17 2026, leaving just a few days in hand!
Giving the death penalty to a 24-year-old who immediately realized his mistake and apologized is deeply cruel. Let us raise our voices before the October 17 deadline to save a Tamil life!

False news. Simply kite flying. If PMK in then VCK + left out. If so, IUML may also go. Also, then PMK will be out of NDA & that’s difficult for them. Bcos vikatan says it isn’t gospel. Any how Mrs Anbumani is functioning well in the TN assembly.
A special Silver for @mirabai_chanu! Congratulations to her on winning the medal in the Women’s 49 kg Weightlifting event. Her determination and consistency continue to inspire the nation. India is proud of her. Best wishes for her future endeavours: PM @narendramodi

A signboard installed along the Mullaitivu–Paranthan Road to guide visitors to the Mullivaikkal Tamil Genocide Memorial site was removed and demolished by the Road Development Authority (RDA) on 14 September 2026.
According to the statement issued by the Mullivaikkal Remembrance Public Structure – North & East, the removal was carried out citing an order of the Mullaitivu District Court in case B/692/2026, filed by the Mullaitivu Police, in which the signboard was described as an unauthorised structure.
The statement questions the removal of the memorial guidance sign while military camp signboards, military-related structures and other constructions remain along the same road. It specifically points to a military camp structure located a few hundred metres from the demolished signboard and a military victory monument in the Puthukkudiyiruppu area.
The statement also notes that a statue depicting an injured schoolboy, which had previously been installed above the signboard, was removed overnight by unidentified persons, despite the court reportedly not issuing an order for its removal.
The organisation condemned the removal, saying that the right of Tamil people to remember those who died during the final stages of the war must be respected. It also reiterated its call for an international investigation into the alleged Tamil genocide and accountability for those responsible.

Following yesterday's NATS technical issue, flights are operating today, but some disruption may continue as airlines reposition aircraft and crew.
Please check your flight status with your airline before travelling to the airport and only travel if your flight is confirmed to be operating.
We apologise to those affected and have extra colleagues across our terminals to support passengers while we work with NATS and airline partners to restore normal operations as quickly as possible

🤖 A reporter's task is not simply to document the result of violence, but to reconstruct the process that produced it. Our new guide by @iainoverton shows you how to investigate a contemporary conflict that increasingly operates through a blurred space between military and civilian systems, where cloud platforms, surveillance networks, AI models and commercial infrastructure have become embedded within warfare itself. It helps you trace the chain from battlefield harm back through the systems that enabled it.
