Do you know the meaning behind the placement of currency coins on soldiers’ headstones? In America’s military, leaving a penny simply means that you visited. A nickel indicates that you and the deceased trained at Basic Combat Training/Recruit Training/Basic Military Training “boot camp” together. Leaving a dime means that you served with the deceased in some capacity. By leaving a quarter, you are telling the family that you were with the soldier when he/she was killed. The practice of leaving a certain denomination of coin seems to have started around June 2009 from a website.

I came across this article in the CIA archives yesterday and was fascinated by it. Thought you all might enjoy.
James Abourezk was a Lebanese-American Christian who served in Congress for South Dakota, one term in the House and one term in the Senate.
This essay was published in the January 1978 issue of Penthouse Magazine and was flagged by the CIA because Abourezk talked about the CIA passing along over $80 million in secret funds to Israel in the 20 year period prior.
After leaving office Abourezk founded the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, (the ADC) which, coincidentally, is where my amazing podcast cohost now works.
