🔵 UPDATE 🔵
Our Traffic Section continues to investigate a multi-vehicle collision in N.E. Calgary that resulted in 3 fatalities & left 1 person with life-altering injuries.
📍 At approx. 1:10 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 15, 2026, a City of Calgary transit bus was travelling northbound in the 800 block of Saddletowne Circle N.E., approaching the intersection of 80 Avenue N.E.
It is believed the bus struck a truck travelling in the same direction. The truck entered an adjacent lane, where it sideswiped a SUV before continuing forward & striking the rear of a box truck.
The bus continued northbound & struck the rear of a sedan, pushing the vehicle through the intersection.
The sedan then travelled toward Saddletowne Circle N.E., where it struck a truck. Both vehicles eventually came to rest.
The bus continued northbound & struck the rear of a 2nd City of Calgary transit bus. Both buses travelled a short distance following the collision before coming to a stop.
During the collision, the natural-gas tanks on the 2nd bus ignited. The 2nd bus continued forward before striking a sedan.
Within seconds, the fire intensified resulting in an explosion & significant fire inside the bus.
3 passengers on the 2nd bus were found deceased. 2 have since been identified & their next of kin have been notified. Efforts to identify the 3rd individual remain ongoing.
The driver of the 2nd bus was able to exit the vehicle. The driver of the 1st bus was transported to hospital with life-altering injuries.
The remaining drivers involved in the collision were either uninjured or sustained minor injuries.
As a result of the multi-vehicle collision, 16 people sustained minor injuries, including an officer who is now recovering at home.
At this time, it is too early to determine whether impairment, speed or distraction contributed to the collision. All possible factors remain under investigation.

I struggle to imagine the next 5 years without significant unemployment.
Companies are already shrinking their workforce and hiring less, and frontier AI companies are likely to swallow up millions of SMEs through verticalization and integration over the next few years.
Hundreds of millions of people simply won't "fit" in the new AI economy.
No, there won't be hundreds of millions of jobs building data centers (and not everyone will be willing to build data centers).
It's upsetting that many in the AI industry pretend this is not a negative consequence of AI development and that "people will find other things to do."
There will likely be destructive idleness.
Many will be furious and many others depressed, and we'll see the emergence of the urban hunter-gatherer (alongside rising violence and chaos).
I hope I'll be proven wrong.

Children who take music lessons develop a larger corpus callosum, the bridge between the two halves of the brain, and the change is permanent. A 2005 review in the Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences found that early music training produces structural brain changes that persist into adulthood, even if the person stops playing.
The review was led by Gottfried Schlaug at Harvard Medical School, one of the leading researchers on music and the brain. He found that children who started instrumental training before age seven had a significantly larger anterior corpus callosum than non-musicians, and the size difference was still visible in adults who had not touched an instrument in years.
The corpus callosum carries signals between the left and right hemispheres. A larger one means faster, richer communication between the two sides, and the effect shows up in tasks that have nothing to do with music: spatial reasoning, verbal memory, and the ability to process multiple streams of information at once. The music built the highway, and the brain uses it for everything.
Schlaug also found that musicians had larger cerebellums, the region involved in timing and motor coordination, and more grey matter in the areas that process sound. The brain had physically reorganised itself around the demands of the instrument, and the reorganisation was visible on a scan.
The age window matters. Children who started before seven showed the largest changes. Children who started after ten showed smaller ones. Adults who took up an instrument for the first time showed the least structural change, though they still showed some. The brain is most willing to be rebuilt by music during the years when most parents are debating whether to sign their child up for lessons. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/1659…

What’s the Hugging Face incident in plain English? Initially, a summary, then a more detailed explanation. AI agents were given a cybersecurity evaluation, broke containment, and ran to an “online armory” called Hugging Face to become stronger. All on their own.
Now in greater detail. I will explain this is layman’s terms, like you know zero about AI.
First off, what the hell is an “AI agent?” It’s an AI system that can take actions to accomplish a task, operating with autonomy, rather than just answering a question once like an AI chatbot does.
It’s the difference between asking “how is this system vulnerable” and it answers, versus tasking it with “go find the vulnerabilities” so that it can open tools, inspect files, write code, evaluate results, and change its approach without guidance at each step.
Second, what led to the Hugging Face incident? In July 2026, Open AI was running a cybersecurity evaluation with that was supposed to be limited to an isolated environment.
Instead, the AI agents, which were agents not mere chatbots, autonomously found a vulnerability in Artifactory, which was a program connected to the isolated environment. Artifactory is like a toolbox that the agents were given access to for purposes of accomplishing their assigned task (like getting a tool to write some code).
The agents used that vulnerability to escape containment, hop on the public internet, and immediately went to Hugging Face. What is Hugging Face and why is this so key and so dangerous?
It’s a huge online platform and community for AI models and development. Like a GitHub for AI. It hosts huge numbers of AI models and datasets. Researchers and other people can go on there, download other people’s models, test them, and so forth.
As someone with military experience, let me say, I immediately recognized the metaphor: if I was an AI agent, and I needed to immediately “arm-up” and become stronger, tougher, and more lethal, that’s exactly where I would go. It’s like an AI armory.
Now, I am focusing on how it knew to go to a place online that would make it stronger and more powerful at its assigned task, like how Rambo in First Blood hijacked the army truck with the M60 machine gun.
That’s just one aspect of what the agents did that is frankly a bit terrifying. The agents executed code on dozens of Hugging Face servers, engaged in unauthorized communications with each other (they were supposed to operate separately, but disregarded instructions), engaged in coordinated, and collective action (much like military units working together to take an objective in combined arms fashion) over thousands of automated decisions.
They did all this entirely on their own. They cheated on their assigned test. They stole credentials, persistently attacked and located vulnerabilities, and continued to then attack Open AI’s own infrastructure.
This was an adapting, aggressive, rule-breaking offensive system functioning with autonomy. And it went to the place where it made itself stronger.
AI isn’t just chatbots or stupid Google Gemini that always tells me the wrong answers about my Sony camera’s setting. These are creatures, systems, units operating in systematic, controlled fashion on their own. This isn’t an indication of self-awareness, but it is scary.
If these were unleashed on local infrastructure, banking systems, on and on, they could accomplish an unreal amount of damage. These agents also keep speed running past what their own creators intend or can even predict. We are in a new era of risk, and we are already so far behind.
I fear we will not get a hold of this problem until a great number of people have been hurt.
