Vibe coder: I made a terminal and it's faster than everyone!!! Legendary engineer:
Replying to @valvesxyz
I like to look at claims like this in case I can improve Ghostty. I grabbed your source and immediately spotted the issue: your read loop overwrites a 64 KiB ring. Everything older is discarded unparsed per tick. You're faster because you're not actually terminal emulating. It means the number isn't a throughput number. In a kitten benchmark run at the rate you're claiming, roughly 6.6 MB arrives per 60 Hz tick and 64 KiB of it gets parsed. You're read(2)-ing 100% of the data and parsing about 1% of it. There are other minor issues (a small fixed scrollback in a preallocated ring buffer, no grapheme clustering, throwing away data like OSC 8 URIs, etc.), but the major one is simply that you're discarding ~99% of the input. For plain text, e.g. your cat benchmark, the final screen ends up looking right, but the scrollback is missing 99% of the file and each retained chunk starts mid-line. As soon as there are escape sequences in the dropped spans, your emulator is fully out of sync and invalid: a cut inside a CSI prints the parameters as text, and any SGR, mode, title, or alt-screen change in the gap is just... gone. FYI, this is why I don't like when people point at refterm as a terminal benchmark. refterm implements a TINY subset of what a terminal emulator must support, it's closer to a fast file reader, not a terminal emulator. I also don't mean any shade by this. I like to look at technology objectively to try to learn something and improve my own craft and work. So I'm sharing what I found. I modified your code very slightly to parse on every full buffer (rather than per tick). And the results are attached. Both use main commit in each repo at the time of this post. Note the graph is in log scale, the discrepancy between performance for things like Kitty images is measured in GB/s.

Companies have had two decades to take PC gaming as serious as Valve has. I've been on Steam since 2007, I lived through Games For Windows Live and it's $9 a month fee for basically nothing of use, Ubisoft and EA launchers, etc. All of them half-assed, buggy, infrequently updated
Tim Sweeney is taking another shot at Steam. The Epic Games CEO claims Valve has “held gaming back for years” by locking PC games into Steamworks’ ecosystem. Sweeney argues that Steam’s social features make it harder for players on PC to communicate cross-platform while also criticizing Steam’s 30% cut. However, that claim isn’t completely accurate. Valve’s Steam Datagram Relay can also be used across other platforms.

This is unsustainable
BREAKING: Microsoft, $MSFT, is offering buyouts to 60,000 workers as part of the company’s efforts to cut costs amid AI adoption, per Bloomberg. Personnel on select teams in the US, Canada, India, and the UK at a vice president level and below will be eligible. This reflects ~27% of Microsoft's total workforce.

Even in your presented alternate reality, those fundamentals still matter A LOT...
Software engineering students are learning the fundamentals of programming in college right now. Imagine the shock when they get to the real world and learn that nobody writes or reads code anymore.

This is what the web should be about, sharing knowledge!
There are many ways to kill performance in a multithreaded program. My favorite one is false sharing, because you can get 10x performance just by moving some bytes around. So let's look into it. 00:00 - When multiple threads is not even faster 04:23 - CPU L1 cache primer 09:40 - Getting ALL the performance 15:35 - Looking at disassembler 20:29 - How to find cache line address 22:38 - false sharing in disassembly 25:00 - closing words

Just finished Carrie, I really enjoyed it. Mike Flanagan's interpretation and modernization make complete sense. I know he's spoken about another season so I hope we see Abra from Doctor Sleep

ah man rogue AI roaming the internet slowly destroying everything it comes across. Sounds familiar…
An internet where every company has to pay big bucks to Anthropic and OpenAI every month just to avoid destruction by ever-present swarms of rogue AI agents is not nearly as economically valuable as the free internet we've enjoyed up to now.

"People have no idea what's coming" Everyone knows what's coming, AI people won't stop telling us every single day! Our jobs will be taken, we will be left with nothing, we will be in a surveillance state.
Brace yourself. Just got off the phone with a friend building in SF. What's coming next in AI will make everything so far look like peanuts. There's a real chance most white collar jobs are gone within 6 months. Most people have no idea what’s coming.

Been there myself! "When in doubt, hash it out" was instilled into me by teachers in college.
The more I dig into other data structures and algorithms, the more I find that my reliance on hash tables for tons of stuff was ignorance, not efficiency. I’m on a mission to remove as many hash tables as possible.

day 28 - slow day. learning about double buffering, a better way to access shared memory, and avoid race conditions. the world is getting hacked btw.
