FINAL KANSAS PREGAME REGULAR SEASON FOOTBALL RANKINGS, brought to you by @SalinaOrtho, with locations in Belleville, Beloit, Colby, Ellsworth and Salina This week's results presented some real challenges in updating our Kansas Pregame football rankings. It's important to remember that our rankings are based on our assessment of each team's ability to compete for a state championship, rather than simply its record or most recent performance. Here's a little analysis of each classification: CLASS 6A: We're pretty confident Mill Valley and Derby are the top two teams. From there, things get considerably more difficult to predict. The Panthers might even deserve the No. 1 spot. Olathe North threw a wrench into the rankings with its overtime victory over Gardner Edgerton, but we still like the Blazers' postseason prospects better than those of the Eagles. If the two teams played 10 times, we think Gardner Edgerton would win at least six. That said, Olathe North is talented and appears to be coming on strong under first-year head coach Jason Peete. The eastern half of the bracket should produce some outstanding playoff matchups. CLASS 5A: It feels like there's a fairly clear top tier of five teams, followed by another tier just below them. Of course, the playoffs could prove us wrong. CLASS 4A: Great Bend appears to be reeling a bit heading into the postseason, while McPherson looks to be on the rise. Bishop Miege is obviously the heavy favorite, but the rest of the field looks remarkably balanced. CLASS 3A: Andale's battle with Reno County Homeschool might give the rest of the field some optimism heading into the postseason, but we suspect that performance was an outlier and the Indians will return to form in the playoffs. Hesston's victory over Chapman was impressive, while Cheney's injury concerns leave some unanswered questions. Still, we like the top four teams a little better than the rest of the field at this point. CLASS 2A: There are two possibilities here: Either Silver Lake is substantially better than everyone else, or this is the deepest classification in state history. From No. 2 on down, we couldn't be less confident in our rankings right now. CLASS 1A: Sterling looks really good. 8-MAN DIVISION I: It feels like the top three teams are probably a step ahead of the rest of the field. 8-MAN DIVISION II: Two possibilities here: Either Axtell and Hanover are two touchdowns better than the rest of the field, or this is the deepest classification of 2026. 6-MAN: We're very confident that our top five teams are the five best teams in the classification. NOTE: South Barber's record reflects their forfeit win over Deerfield and the win over Billings, Okla., from the game that was played in place of that Deerfield game.

Yotes, The Little Brown Jug has kept score between the Yotes and Jacks since 1927. Its inscription offers a challenge: “TRY AND GET IT.” Curious words for a relic now absent from the rolls. One wonders what hand might yet return the old prize to service. For the Paw

I wonder how often we give up on someone because their progress doesn’t match our timetable. Felix Anudike-Uzomah (@fanudike) faced surgery on both hamstrings, a long recovery and plenty of people calling him a bust. He kept working. There’s a lesson here for every part of life. In our families, friendships, workplaces and the people we lead. We can hold high expectations and still have patience. We can acknowledge where someone is struggling and still believe in what they’re capable of becoming. Our encouragement shouldn’t depend on whether they’re winning. Most of us have needed someone to believe in us through a difficult stretch. We can be that person for someone else. And when it’s our turn to struggle, we need to remember this ourselves. Never give up on yourself. Or be too quick to give up on another. Worth the read. Thank you, @SamMcDowell11 and @KCStar, for telling his story. kansascity.com/sports/spt-co… @Chiefs | @KStateFB

In 2013 Jason Eck was changing the oil on lawnmowers and golf carts. He was a Division I offensive line coach. Western Illinois had fired the head coach, and rather than pay out what it owed the assistants, the school kept them on payroll and sent them to work other jobs on campus. Eck got the golf course. Then they moved him to a cubicle at the public transit center in Macomb, Illinois. Here is how he describes it. "I got transferred to the guy who ran the bookstore and the campus bus system." Saturday night his New Mexico team is 5 and 1 with the best scoring defense in the country. He has five kids. Here is what he says about those years. "We've been in bad debt, bad financial shape. I've got five kids so it was nuts." The man who ran that bookstore and bus system, Jude Kiah, is the one who talked him out of quitting. Kiah asked him whether he really wanted to walk away from everything he had put in. Eck started hunting jobs instead. By that July he was the offensive coordinator at Minnesota State. He walked on at Wisconsin as an offensive lineman. He thought about law school and never took the test. After the Rose Bowl he asked to coach instead. His own dad coached college basketball. Toledo fired Jay Eck in 1991, less than a week after a one point loss with an NCAA tournament bid on it. Jason took job after job after that. His wife Kimberly found out he had lost the Ball State job while she was going into labor with their third son. Then South Dakota State, where John Stiegelmeier told him he would make a really good head coach. Idaho hired him in December of 2021 and he went 26 and 13 there. New Mexico hired him two years ago. Last season the Lobos won nine games, beat UCLA, made their first bowl since 2016 and sold out a home game for the first time since 2007. He was Mountain West coach of the year. And one of his linebackers is his son. Jaxton Eck came out of Brookings, South Dakota with offers from Sioux Falls and Northern State. Division II. He played for his dad at Idaho, and when his dad took the New Mexico job he had North Carolina State, Michigan State and Stanford asking for him. He went to New Mexico. Last season he had 115 tackles and shared Mountain West defensive player of the year. Father and son won conference awards in the same season. Now the part that complicates it. One good year is not a program. New Mexico has been bad for most of the last fifty years, and the hard truth about coaches who win there is that somebody bigger calls. But here is what Jason Eck says now. He does not know whether he would ever have become a head coach if his son had not played football. Thirteen years ago he was changing oil on a lawnmower. What were you doing right before the job that changed everything for you?

When college coaches and recruiting departments evaluate high school football prospects, the process goes beyond athletic ability, statistics and highlight films Character, maturity, accountability, coachability and overall program fit all matter Parents also need to understand how their behavior can influence the recruiting process Recruiting red flags parents should avoid: 🔹 Controlling Communication: Constantly contacting coaches instead of allowing athletes to build relationships 🔹 Overbearing Behavior: Dominating recruiting visits or speaking for your child 🔹 Criticizing Coaches: Publicly complaining about playing time, coaching decisions or recruiting opportunities 🔹 Unrealistic Expectations: Assuming your child deserves Division I offers based on statistics or accolades 🔹 Misrepresenting Interest: Exaggerating scholarship offers, measurables or recruiting attention 🔹 Pressuring Staff: Demanding offers, immediate responses or recruiting decisions 🔹 Negative Social Media Activity: Publicly criticizing programs, coaches or other athletes 🔹 Creating Conflict: Confronting high school coaches or making excuses for poor performance 🔹 Disrespecting Opportunities: Dismissing FCS, DII, DIII or NAIA programs without considering fit 🔹 Prioritizing Exposure: Focusing on rankings and publicity over development and academics 🔹 Controlling Decisions: Pressuring athletes toward certain programs or making recruitment about the parent WHAT COLLEGE COACHES VALUE: ✅ Maturity and independence ✅ Accountability and coachability ✅ Professionalism and honesty ✅ Academic commitment ✅ Realistic expectations ✅ Genuine interest in their program MY MESSAGE TO PARENTS: ‼️Be involved, ask questions and advocate for your child, but allow them to take ownership of their recruitment These behaviors are potential concerns, not automatic disqualifiers 🚨College coaches are recruiting your child, not you. Help them develop the independence, communication skills and accountability needed at the next level Your involvement should open doors, not create obstacles. 🏈 Support the athlete. Respect the process. Let your child take ownership of their future
