Ansaru claims responsibility for the assassination of popular Islamic cleric Sheikh Yahaya Masussuka, accusing him of being an infidel. In an audio recording confirming responsibility for the killing, Ansaru said it carried out the attack at around 8:30 pm. While the speaker mentioned 'Talata' (Tuesday) as the day the attack took place, which could have been a mistake, the incident actually happened yesterday, Monday. Ansaru accused Masussuka of being anti-Islam. It did not mention any specific offence he had committed, though it suggested that the cleric's promotion of interfaith dialogue and peaceful coexistence may have contributed to his killing. The assassination adds to a series of security incidents in northwest Nigeria, as insecurity worsens ahead of next year's elections. The fact that Ansaru has claimed responsibility provides authorities with an opportunity to concentrate their efforts on the group and unravel the identities of those directly behind the attack. This is even more important given that the group also threatened those it described as enemies of Islam. In addition to Zaria, Kaduna, Kano and Abuja, Katsina has also been a prominent base for Ansaru over the years.

JAS fighters claimed they attacked an ISWAP position on Lake Chad islands, resulting in ISWAP fighters fleeing. The incident happened last Saturday, 17 October, with the video clearly showing the JAS fighters running and shooting in one direction, supporting the narrator’s claim that “they (ISWAP fighters) are running away.” The JAS-ISWAP clash has become a pain in the neck for ISWAP, contributing to the exit of fighters from the group. JAS, on the other hand, seems to enjoy going after their counterparts, as if on a hunting spree.

And, first in a very long while video of an attack on a military base in Mairari, Borno was released earlier today. According to official data, 15 Nigerian soldiers and five civilian militia members were killed by Islamic State. A lot of vehicles were destroyed. #Nigeria
Safe to say that with the mid-October now passed, Islamic State is back to regular *stronger* raids after a few months of trouble caused by US focus on disrupting global network of the group inside Nigeria. As expected, mowing the lawn not resolving anything in the long run.

Sebastian Gorka, the US National Security Council’s Senior Director for Counterterrorism, revealed that 199 jihadists were killed in a joint US–Nigeria operation.🙆 The operation yielded such a massive cache of enemy communication equipment that additional aircraft had to be requested to transport it back to the US. The real prize? Intelligence that could expose how ISIS operatives communicate and coordinate their activities.

In 2014, we warned about Boko Haram. Much of what we feared came to pass. Today, in 2026, we warn again: 16 years into this war, we have barely begun addressing what sustains it. Khalil was a child in 2015. Today, he is training another generation. The warning signs are here again.
This is Khalil, far left in the background, a child in 2015. The son of a first-generation Boko Haram Kaid, Mohammed Zangina, he was trained to become a fighter and propagandist. Today, he is a senior member of Maktab al-Shar‘i, training another generation of children into terrorists. Full investigation: humanglemedia.com/nigeria-sa…

Djaffar Dicko saying: Anyone interfering in the war between JNIM and the state will be considered an enemy, and Manga Barry, allegedly killed by, army, is still alive. Dominance just 2 km beyond the cities belongs entirely to JNIM, leaving the public in a position of celebrating the mere arrival of supply convoys. Moreover, what is coming for everyone will be far worse than anything seen so far.
In his new speech, JNIM’s second in command in Burkina Faso, Djaffar Dicko (Uwais Al Ansari), describes the April 25 attack in Mali as a major turning point marking a new phase of the war in the Sahel. Simple hit and run raids are being abandoned for more intense and systematic attacks, with such offensives set to increase. Furthermore, civilians are being targeted in Burkina Faso.

A rare video published by IS-Sahel fighters through unofficial channels, threatening disbelievers in general and the Sahelian armies of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso in particular, warning that the war has only just started. The speaker also calls on JNIM fighters to repent, taunting them with a series of rhetorical questions: how many times have we defeated you, how many of you have we taken prisoner, and have you not learned your lesson yet? He also puns on al-Qaeda's name, calling it "the organisation of the sitters. He also sends his greetings to IS caliph Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, telling him to rejoice, as he has in the Sahel province men "who do not sleep on injustice."

A notable aspect of the recent hostage swaps in Mali is Niger's indirect role. Some French outlets framed Inkinane's release as part of a swap for the two Russian Africa Corps soldiers. Tried my best to tie everything together in this week's Africa File. Loads going on.
Vidéo de la libération d’Inkinane, le Mali a bien abandonné sa demande d’extradition du Niger qui a joué le jeu
