James Cleverlyโs claim that the UK couldnโt cut VAT because we were in the EU is wrong.
In 2008, while the UK was an EU member, the government cut standard VAT from 17.5% to 15%.
And in July 2020, during the Brexit transition period, the government cut VAT to 5% on certain hospitality and tourism services. EU rules allowed reduced rates on eligible services.
Covid and the war in Ukraine make Brexitโs precise economic impact harder to isolate. They donโt make it impossible to estimate: the OBR still forecasts that the UKโs post-Brexit trading relationship will reduce long-run productivity by 4% compared with staying in the EU.

Norway is facing a deteriorating cybersecurity environment, with authorities reporting a sharp increase in successful cyber operations.
On October 27, Norway's National Security Authority (NSM) publicly announced a HIGH national cyber risk level, the second-highest on its five-level scale.
Key findings:
โข Successful cyber operations against Norwegian organisations have tripled over the past six months.
โข Defence, space and critical infrastructure sectors face particularly high risks.
โข Authorities warn that cyberattacks could disrupt electricity, water, mobile networks and internet services.
โข NSM and the Directorate for Civil Protection have urged the public to prepare for potential disruptions.
Just three days later, on October 30, the Arctic University of Norway (UiT) disclosed a targeted cyberattack.
Attackers successfully accessed several servers, forcing the university to take affected systems offline.
University officials described the attacker as a well-resourced threat actor and confirmed that this was not a conventional DDoS attack.
As of October 31, no theft of personal information had been identified.
The attacker's identity and motives remain unknown, and no direct connection to the broader increase in cyber operations has been established.
The developments highlight growing cybersecurity challenges facing Norway, including institutions operating in the strategically important Arctic region.

๐ฆ๐ช Anwar Gargash, diplomatic adviser to UAE President Mohamed bin Zayed, warned Sunday that the region is "braced for the worst" as US and Iranian positions remain far apart. "If these positions are not bridged, then we have to worry about the worst," he said at the International Institute for Strategic Studies' Manama Dialogue security conference in Bahrain.
"We don't really want to see another round of confrontation in the region," Gargash said, adding that the UAE was ready "to protect our achievements, our development model, our country, our citizens and people who are resident here."
He said Gulf states "have not collectively risen to the challenge," adding, "Nationally, we have." Gargash said all Gulf states are in contact with Tehran. "Of course, we are talking to Iran. All Gulf countries are talking to Iran through different channels," he said. He called restoring pre-war shipping through the Strait of Hormuz a non-negotiable priority, saying disruption to "the flow of energy, the flow of trade" cannot be "a cost that we will all bear because of a crisis that we did not create." He also said the war had exposed Gulf collective security in some cases "hollow," and called for "rebuilding Gulf confidence."

- At the same time, there was a feeling of resignation: no one willing to criticize the Trump administration in public, nor to talk in private about what sort of pressure they might bring to bear on America
- There were even some bizarro-world discussions about opportunities for growth and connectivity in the Gulf. Trump is driving a car with no brakes, Gulf states are strapped on the roof, and people are somehow still talking about, like, IMEC and data centers
- Barely any American representation, at a moment when America is deciding the fate of its Gulf allies
- No clarity on what sort of deal (sequencing, nuclear concessions, etc.) the Trump administration would actually be willing to accept. And a broad consensus that Trump himself may not be clear
- Lots of upbeat talk about the Mecca pact, middle powers playing a role in maritime security and so on; little evidence any of this is making a difference yet
- Gargash offered some well-founded criticism of Gulf states failing to work together this year; everyone else offered paeans to Gulf solidarity that seem disconnected from reality
In general, the feeling was a world in torpor: nobody wants this, and nobody has any great ideas for how to stop it

U.S. agents temporarily took control of much of Argentinaโs Iguazรบ airport to facilitate Flรกvio Bolsonaroโs escape to Miami, according to Argentine newspaper Clarรญn.

๐บArsenio Dominguez, secretary-general of the UNโs International Maritime Organization (IMO), shared several significant updates on the Strait of Hormuz and the wider maritime crisis in an interview with Bloomberg on Sunday:
โค Shipping Collapse: Before the war, approximately 135 vessels transited the strait daily. That fell over 90% to an average of just 12 per day between October 22 and 28, with only two recorded crossings on October 29. Many tankers are operating with tracking systems switched off, making actual traffic harder to measure.
โค Attacks and Casualties: The IMO confirmed 30 attacks on vessels in October alone and more than 120 since the war began. Two vessels recently sank in the strait, including a container ship. At least 24 seafarers have been killed, with several others missing or seriously wounded.
โค Mines and Environmental Damage: Dominguez said previous assessments indicated approximately 80 mines in the established shipping corridor, and there is no confirmation the waterway has been cleared. Attacks have now caused oil spills off Qatar, Oman and the UAE.
โค Global Economic Fallout: Citing UN trade data, Dominguez said jet fuel prices have surged 80% and shipping fuel approximately 70%. Diesel prices have risen more than 20% in over 95 countries. Disruptions are also affecting manufacturing and fertilizer shipments, threatening food security.
โค Limited Alternatives: Countries are developing pipelines, rail connections and alternative trade routes to bypass conflict zones, but Dominguez said land-based alternatives can transport only around 5% of affected cargo volumes.

Copies are reportedly hidden in a gun safe in Virginia, a bank vault in Washington, and a third location on the West Coast.
The officials allege Hegseth and his inner circle ignored legal advice, kept information from Congress and threatened the careers of people who challenged them.
Some have even met lawmakers at sandwich shops and dog parks, away from Capitol Hill.
Now they're waiting to see if Democrats win the House next week, potentially opening the door to an impeachment investigation in 2027.
In the words of one officer: "We're ready with the receipts."
For now, the evidence remains hidden, and whether it ever becomes an impeachment case could come down to who controls Congress.

BREAKING: ๐ธ๐ช Swedish grocery giant ICA, one of Sweden's largest supermarket chains, says several of its stores have been hit by a cyberattack overnight, causing refrigerators and freezers to be remotely set to 50ยฐC.
The incident has likely resulted in large quantities of food spoiling. Multiple stores, including ICA Kvantum in Sjรถbo and Tomelilla, have reported being affected.
ICA says stores will remain closed during the morning and are expected to reopen at 9:00 a.m. Swedish time.
The company has apologized to customers and says it is working to restore normal operations.
The incident comes amid a wave of cyberattacks targeting businesses recent weeks, following similar incidents reported in France and the United States.
