Our new open-access paper on #dinosaur #BrainEvolution is out in @eLife today. We use CT imaging and 3-D shape analysis to show that unique allometric and integration trends dictate avian brain evolution and development. elifesciences.org/articles/6…

𝗕𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Excellent piece by Sherman and Usrey on brain evolution. Unfortunately it emphasizes "cortical control" and misses the opportunity to discuss how *integration* across the neuroaxis has been a major theme too. jneurosci.org/lookup/doi/10.…

In an essay for @IAI_TV, @pgodfreysmith, Professor of History and Philosophy of Science at the @Sydney_Uni, examines evidence from other animals suggesting that consciousness is linked to large-scale electrical oscillations moving across living cell membranes. "Nervous system oscillations of this kind are all over the animal kingdom. Brain rhythms that are similar to ours are found in bees, flies and octopuses. In a simple form, they are even found in jellyfish-like animals (which have no brain, but do have a nervous system). This can be taken to support the view that oscillating is something that nervous systems just do, easily or inevitably, without playing much of a role. And how could oscillations have a role in consciousness if they are found in animals, like jellyfish, that are probably not conscious at all?" The key observation is that nervous systems separated by hundreds of millions of years of evolution exhibit similar rhythmic electrical dynamics linked to awareness and behavior. Consciousness likely exists on a spectrum across living organisms. It's not uniquely human but is expressed differently across bodies and rooted in shared biological processes. 📃Read the full piece here: iai.tv/articles/studies-on-a… #Consciousness #AnimalCognition #Bioethics #Intelligence #PhilosophyOfMind #AnimalEthics

“Phylogeny explains the 98% to 99% of genetic material all humans share with Neanderthals simply because we split from a common ancestor around 500,000 years ago”, puts it into perspective

Neanderthal brains are elongate, like (American) football, our brains are globular, like soccer ball. And now we’ve found some Neanderthal genes surviving in modern humans that nudge brains toward Neander shape (and affect neurons, axons). science.org/content/article/…

This month @BrainPaleo explores direct comparison of brains and endocasts in the same 75 individuals, showing that sulcal imprints are short and discontinuous. A new class of endocranial marks are identified, proposing a new standard for interpreting fossil endocasts.

A new study published in iScience proposes that cephalopods may be evidence that something else is the dominant driver of brain size. They refer to the cultural brain hypothesis, first introduced in a 2018 paper by economic psychologist Michael Muthukrishna and colleagues.

As an #EvoDevo conclusion, we propose that the conservation of circuits must be reflected at their developmental history. So, the tight conservation of the neurogenic program is, in fact, the main cause of circuit conservation. At @AchucarroGlia
