#PostOfficeScandal #PostOfficeInquiry #StateScandal A former Director of Public Prosecutions Sir David Calvert-Smith, who reviewed scores of sub-postmaster appeals for the Post Office has said that in at least 12 of the convictions, judges should have “probed” the prosecution case “more deeply”. In 2021 the @PostOffice instructed Calvert-Smith and Brian Altman KC to review the cases of 42 convicted Sub-postmasters before they went to the Court of Appeal. Ultimately, the appeal judge quashed 39 of the convictions. Speaking at a Bar Council (@thebarcouncil ) conference in London at the weekend, Calvert-Smith addressed the question of whether some Crown Court judges who heard the private prosecutions brought by the Post Office had let Sub-postmasters down. Also speaking at the conference, Flora Page, a Barrister who has represented a number of Sub-postmasters, said that in some cases judges had “for sure” failed the defendants. Flora Page described the case of one woman as “an absolute shocker from start to finish — every aspect of the system let her down”. The Barrister described the process as “a show trial” that involved “the Post Office and Fujitsu using the trial to justify the Horizon system. And the judge, unfortunately, fell for it.” Full article 👇 thetimes.com/article/58152a1… @FloraClairePage @edwardhenry1 @joe_rich @RichardMoorhead @PaulMar72224296 @GouldsBlog @SeemaMisra7 @BBCEmmaSimpson

The UK is now the fourth largest exporter of goods and services in the world, overtaking France, Netherlands and Japan. According to the latest statistics from the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), which leads on global trade for the UN, the UK has overtaken France, Netherlands and Japan to take fourth position, behind only China, the US, and Germany. In a separate report, the recently published 'The True Impact of UK Manufacturing’ shows industry is worth £518bn and supports 7.3million UK jobs directly and across the supply chains/communities it operates in. This represents nearly a quarter of total GDP (23%) and far bigger than the direct contribution of 8.2% that is usually quoted by economists. Carried out by Oxford Economics and the Manufacturing Technologies Association (MTA), the in-depth report also shows that ‘making things’ accounts for 34.5% of all UK goods and services exports. The UK’s thriving, and internationally renowned, motorsport industry comprises over 4,000 firms and supports more than 40,000 British jobs. The majority of current Formula One teams, including McLaren, Aston Martin, Red Bull, Williams and Mercedes, have their headquarters and operations in the UK, further cementing the country’s status as a global motorsport powerhouse. This year, Aston Martin has unveiled its new £200m Silverstone factory and Mercedes announced plans to invest a further £30m upgrading its Brackley F1 factory. The German manufacturer employs more than 1.250 people at the Northamptonshire site where it has invested £40 million over the last five years. In addition to this, Radical Motorsport - the UK’s largest race car manufacturer - has opened a new HQ at Donington Park, McLaren is repurposing its former F1 factory in Woking to become a new composites facility as part of a range of major infrastructure upgrades, and just last week Jaguar TCS Racing opened a new HQ in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, as the team ramps up its preparations for the upcoming 2024 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.

JCB has made a major breakthrough in proving the wider appeal of hydrogen combustion technology by installing one of its super-efficient hydrogen engines into a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van. The white van retrofit was completed in just two weeks and one of the vehicle’s first test drivers was JCB Chairman Anthony Bamford, who is leading the company’s £100 million hydrogen engine project. JCB has already manufactured more than 70 hydrogen internal combustion engines in a project involving 150 British engineers and they now power prototype JCB backhoe loader and Loadall telescopic handler machines. The converted van was formerly diesel-powered and the switch to hydrogen is another breakthrough which underlines that this form of power could represent a much quicker way to reach global carbon dioxide emissions targets. #UKmfg

"OneSavings Bank shares plunge by nearly a quarter" (cityam.com) Why does it surprise these 'bankers' that customers would move before slipping onto excessive interest rate payments? #BadPlanning? #culture

Some people think there must have been some fraud at the Post Office. There was, and that seems to have influenced management to trust the new - and badly flawed - IT system rather than the staff! The result was a tragedy.

Last week's IMF forecast for UK growth - minus 0.3% in 2023 - featured heavily across TV/radio news bulletins. Very few mentioned that IMF also reported that in 2022 chalked up 4% growth, the fastest in the G7 – a fact, rather than a forecast. The highly-influential @EY_UKI "Item Club" has just predicted the UK will actually grow 0.2% in 2023. How much news coverage will this attract? #doomandgloom
