⚠️ Record-setting King Tide in Newport Beach today, the highest ever. El Niño's Kelvin wave has the sea water running up to 22 inches above predictions, and with this king tide stacked on top, harbor water is reaching the front doors of bayfront homes. #orangcounty #breaking
The Balboa Ferry is closed to vehicles because of how high it is above the ramp. #newportbeach #kingtide #OrangeCounty

500 million years of Earth’s history are written in the rocks of the Sierra Nevada. 🗺️⛰️ The Sierra Nevada is one of the most iconic landscapes in the western U.S., a major mountain range stretching north to south along eastern California and into a small portion of western Nevada. Its rocks hold a story that spans more than 500 million years. Now, the Sierra Nevada Earth Science Atlas brings that story into sharper focus. Created through a collaboration between the @CAGeoSurvey and the USGS, the Atlas provides the most detailed geologic framework of the Sierra Nevada to date. Why does that matter? Detailed geologic maps help scientists and resource managers understand what lies beneath the surface, from the rocks and faults that shape the landscape to the mineral resources and geologic processes that affect the region. From ancient ocean deposits and volcanic islands to massive mountain-building events, erosion and glaciation, the Atlas captures the geologic processes that shaped the Sierra Nevada we see today. This initial release features a geologic map and descriptive text, with more components of the full Atlas coming soon. Upcoming map layers will depict carbonate rocks, fossils, metallic mineralization regions, and geochronology data, along with an associated report. Explore the Atlas 👉 ow.ly/HXwc5101rgf 📽️ Video consisting of several clips of the Sierra Nevada Earth Science Atlas. The video pans and zooms across the map to show different geographic and geologic features. The video includes close-up views of map details, the legend, and the entire atlas.

It’s a fee-free entrance day for U.S. citizens and residents at Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks! Today we celebrate Theodore Roosevelt, the 26th president of the United States, who left a lasting mark on America’s public lands. During his presidency, he established five national parks, designated 18 national monuments, created 51 federal bird reservations, and protected about 230 million acres of public land for future generations. In 1901, a giant sequoia tree was named after Theodore Roosevelt by acting Sequoia National Park Superintendent Capt. Lincoln Andrews. In his report to the Secretary of the Interior, Andrews wrote, “Between the road and Moro Rock stands a lone Sequoia, considered the most perfect specimen, though not so large, which I have named for His Excellency Theodore Roosevelt, President of the United States.” NPS/H. Amazing. 61 miles offshore. Hard to imagine the sequence of events that led to settlement of this distant island, with available technology, thousands of years ago. Today the place belongs to the Navy.
The Nicoleño (nee-koh-LAY-nyoh) were the Indigenous people of San Nicolas Island, the most remote of California’s Channel Islands. Archaeological evidence shows people lived there for thousands of years. They were Uto-Aztecan speakers closely related to the Tongva (Gabrielino) of the mainland. By the early 1800s their numbers had fallen sharply from disease, a deadly 1814 clash with Russian-American Company otter hunters, and other colonial pressures. In 1835 the remaining small group left for the mainland on the Mexican schooner Peor es Nada. The removal was arranged for their safety after years of decline. A sudden storm forced the ship to sail, and one woman stayed behind with her son. She lived with him for years until a shark or orca took his life while he was fishing. After that she was alone. Captain George Nidever’s party found her in 1853, about 50 years old, living in a whale-bone hut and a nearby cave, wearing a dress of cormorant feathers sewn with sinew, and surviving on shellfish, fish, seals, and seabirds. She greeted the men warmly and spoke a language no one on the mainland understood. Taken to Santa Barbara, she stayed with the Nidever family, was noted for her cheerful manner, was baptized Juana María on her deathbed, and died of illness on October 19, 1853, just seven weeks after leaving the island. Her story inspired Island of the Blue Dolphins. No photograph of her survives. The painting by Holli Harmon shows her on a coastal bluff at Corral Harbor, wearing a dark feather dress, holding a woven basket, and looking out to sea, with a dog, seabirds, and yellow wildflowers around her.

This is the difference. California relies on the honor system. If someone attests they’re a U.S. citizen, they don’t check or verify it. But DHS has their alien numbers and full immigration histories. This is going to be a really interesting fight to watch play out.
NEW: LA County says a sample of the Trump admin's 200 names of suspected non-citizen voters showed that 38.9% attested to being born in the US. But in a new sworn statement under penalty of perjury, a DHS official says its investigation shows NONE of LA County's 200 names were born in the US.   "After a thorough review of the immigration records of all the individuals on the County's Sample List, it was determined that none of the individuals USCIS matched to the County's Sample List were born in the United States according to USCIS records," -Nicolas Bartell, Associate Director of Fraud Detection at USCIS.

Normalizing prescribed burning 🔥 in California. Wildfire prevention is a choice. Elections have consequences.
The best time to fight a wildfire is before it starts. Prescribed burning, or beneficial fire, is an important part of wildfire prevention. By intentionally reintroducing fire under carefully managed conditions, we help reduce the buildup of dry grass, brush, and other vegetation that can fuel larger, more destructive wildfires. Reducing excess vegetation helps create healthier, more resilient landscapes, supports natural ecosystem processes, and can help slow the spread of future wildfires. As cooler weather returns and conditions allow, prescribed burns will take place across California to reduce hazardous fuels and support long-term wildfire resilience. 📍Recently, @CALFIRE_ButteCo, in partnership with @CAStateParks and the @CA_DWR, conducted a prescribed burn at Loafer Creek State Recreation Area in east Oroville, treating 86 acres to reduce hazardous fuels and help protect the surrounding community. Another successful prescribed burn. ✔️ Working alongside our partners at Whiskeytown National Recreation Area in California, we completed an 80-acre understory burn on the Cascade Unit, the first of more to come. The work was done by the Diamond Mountain Interagency Hotshots, two crews from CAL FIRE’s Trinity River Conservation Camp, the Redding Fuels Module and Engine 680. The goal: reduce hazardous fuels along the park boundary near private property, helping reduce wildfire risk for neighboring communities and landowners.

Higher elevation sections of the High Sierra Trail including Precipice Lake and Mount Whitney received sizable amounts of snow.

No kings 🤴- Newsom is just another pawn ♟️.
Governor Newsom on 17 October: "The whole - the system's broken. It's completely unbalanced. And you can't - we can't manage the decline. We have to completely reimagine." Then within the files, I see very similar language: "The system is broken — and it cannot fix itself." Does that mean the specific ex-USAID workers we've been tracking are controlling Newsom? No. But as you've seen throughout these files, every individual in the ecosystem belongs to multiple NGOs and alliances. They network constantly. They attend each other's conferences. They form coalitions on similar projects. They give each other feedback. That's how they develop a hive mind. The proposed methods may differ from group to group, but they are all converging on one goal: America governance must be rewritten from top down, and soon.

It’s official now: DSA = DNC Vote Republican!
UNDERCOVER: GAVIN NEWSOM SAYS THE DSA IS "GOING TO BE DOMINANT" AND "MAINSTREAM" IN THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY! "The DSA, the energy and the desire and demand for bold change, not incremental change, is very much going to be dominant. I mean, that's going to be a mainstream Democratic movement. Absolutely. No question about that." That's California Gov. Gavin Newsom, a likely 2028 presidential candidate, speaking to an undercover journalist while campaigning in New Hampshire. Asked by a "younger voter" who said "we don't want Kamala Harris, we want more democratic socialist policies": "No one is arguing to manage the status quo and fail more efficiently." "You can't play in the margins anymore. The system's broken. It's completely unbalanced, and we can't manage the decline. We have to completely reimagine."
