As a 35 year metalhead with eclectic tastes, I've been a victim of gatekeeping more times than I can count. Sometimes by fans 10 or 15 years younger, who are the purity test crowd. Because how dare I like Carcass, Darkthorne and Bon Jovi! That's gatekeeping in its purest form. Same thing constantly occurs with political parties. What's happening around horror could arguably be described as gatekeeping in reverse. Many newer younger fans, who deem themselves elitists, because they've been raised on meta or elevated horror. Even though horror has been elevated since it's silent film inception. Are dismissive and have no respect for the classics whatsoever, or the fans of the classics. So like the vandals they frequently are, they look down with contempt on franchises like Friday the 13th and Halloween. Viewing them as cheesy, cliche filled, lowest common denominator garbage. They mock the acting and the special effects. Usually deem them problematic, roll their eyes at happy endings. Now days, everything simply must be grim and dire! Therefore, when old school hardcore fans open our mouths, complaining about the remakes. We're told to be quiet, and called no good Boomers, even though most of us are Gen X or Millennials. While claiming that we desperately cling to nostalgia and refuse to get with the times. When in reality, we'd more than welcome a new Friday the 13th or Halloween film. As long as it remains relatively loyal to the source material, is respectful of the original films and captures their tone and essence to perfection. Case in point, very few people complained about Doctor Sleep. Which had the highest of high bars to crest. Personally, I loved it. We hold remakes and reboots to incredibly high standards, yes... because of our emotional attachment to the earlier films. We're very very passionate! So we can get nitpicky when the reboot undermines the originals to such a great extent. We want them to remain loyal and build on the mythology, not render it obsolete by erasing it altogether. But the moment we object, we're dismissively called gatekeepers and told to be quiet. So it can be argued that it's a generational battle for the heart, soul and future of horror between two completely different mindsets. The Old Ways Gatekeepers vs. The New Ways Gatekeepers. So it goes far deeper than some petty "I'm more hardcore than you" nonsense.
I think I'd like to do a video on what exactly GATEKEEPING is, because the word gets thrown around so much these days. And maybe I could learn from this. So let me know what YOU think gatekeeping is in the comments. I will give you credit in the video if I read it. I can tell you in my heart of hearts, and it's a passionate heart, I would never want to make anyone feel like they're opinion on any movie is wrong. A passionate opinion isn't gatekeeping in my book. I love that we all have differing opinions on movies and I wouldn't have it any other way.
