Not sure what's more mind boggling, that a huge portion of the Auburn fanbase wanted Durkin as HC or that Durkin makes almost $3 million for this.
Every week I think officiating can't get worse and every week I see new levels of stupidity at the high school, college and pro levels.
.@SECOfficiating says the Auburn player signaled fair catch who didn’t catch the ball, therefore the ball is down wherever it’s caught. #4 did not signal fair catch
Austin facing a region opponent in the first round. Mae Jemison having to go 5 hours for a first round game. There's a reason Alabama doesn't do it this way, it's stupid.
Just for fun, I thought I'd plug Alabama teams into the GHSA postseason rankings formula and see what it gave me. Seems like a modified RPI of sorts. You can check out all classifications here: rankings.alpreps.com/psr
Here are the 5A/6A brackets using that formula now that the regular season is over.
6A doesn't look that bad, all region champs get a bye. No shock that 4 of 8 byes are region 3. Oak Mtn/Dothan get in, Alma Bryant/Robertsdale drop out. You'd only have one same-region match-up in round 1 (Auburn/JAG) and only one Region 1v4 game (Foley/Huntsville, although Enterprise/Bob Jones is rough too).
If top seeds won, you'd get Prattville vs Central and Thompson vs Vestavia as your semi match-ups.
5A is much more interesting. Clay drops all the way to #10. I can only assume it's because the region isn't seen as strong mathematically, and despite playing the top two teams in the state, they were losses. Pell City/St. Clair Co from that region just miss, as does Gardendale in favor of Huffman AND Jasper (both of whom Gardendale beat), and Mountain Brook (who missed on a tiebreaker).
You'd have a weird Ben Russell/Pike Road and Florence/Austin first round rematch but those are the only same region games. Would probably need to make a rule against that. Rough travel would come with Saraland/Mae Jemison, Oxford/Spanish Fort, and Russellville/Stanhope. Teams like Huffman to Gulf Shores may seem rough until you realize Ramsay is making an identical trip anyway this week.
If top seeds won, quarterfinal match-ups would be Hillcrest vs Boaz, Homewood vs Russellville, Gulf Shores vs Clay, Parker vs Saraland.
Just a neat little experiment, it's interesting to see how other states do it.
