Islamabad Science Festival 2026 · School Category results 🏆
A girls' school from Shangla, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa whose men go down coal mines across Pakistan, built a mine-safety system. It took first place.
21 government schools competed from across the country. Three of the four schools Sindh sent finished in the top three. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa secured first and shared third place with AJK and Sindh.
🥇 Shangla Girls School and College, Shangla, KP · Safe Mine
🥈 GBHS Malanhore Veena, Mithi, Tharparkar · Green Tech Resilience
🥈 GGHS Hyderabad, Sindh · Shield Sindh
🥉 GHSS Naudeh Payan, Peshawar · Auto Fire Response
🥉 GGHS Bankhurma, Mirpur, AJK · Parking System
🥉 GBHS Talib ul Moula Kunri Memon, Umerkot · Eco Vita Village
Two schools tied for second. Three tied for third. The jury could not separate them.
Talent is evenly distributed across Pakistan. Platforms are not. That gap is why ISF exists.
Congratulations to every student, teacher and parent behind these projects.

Virtual Gadolinium: the project that won first place in the universities category at Islamabad Science Festival 2026. 🥇
It comes from Samar Abbas of the @Narowaluni, who built it as his final year project under the supervision of Zaeem Nazir. An MRI scan often needs a gadolinium-based contrast injection so doctors can see the area clearly. Samar explains that the injection is a risk for some patients, including those with kidney disease, is not available in many local hospitals, and is costly for middle-class families.
His AI-driven approach generates contrast-enhanced MRI images from non-contrast scans, with the goal of reducing the need for the injection in suitable cases. It is research and a software prototype, not a clinical tool.
It also comes from a public university that Federal Minister @PlanComPakistan Professor Ahsan Iqbal (@betterpakistan) founded in Narowal - current enrolment at 7,000 students, 5,000 of them women.
ISF exists to put work like this on a national stage, free for every student of a government institution.

In some tehsils across Pakistan, more than 8 in 10 girls aged 5–16 have never set foot in a classroom. Not dropped out, they were never enrolled.
I wrote about what the census found, and why the gap follows girls straight into the workforce and out of STEM.

A genuinely productive evening, hosted by the Royal Danish Embassy and Novo Nordisk, on a health crisis Pakistan doesn't talk about enough: obesity, its medical burden, and the policy partnerships needed to actually address it.
Grateful to @ridaqz for the invitation, and to Ambassador @DKInPK for the hospitality. In the room: Senator @AnushaRehman, Senator @SenatorMumtaz, former caretaker Health Minister, Dr. Shabana Haider from the Population Planning Commission, and the Novo Nordisk and Danish Embassy teams.
One number worth sitting with: nearly 40% of people with obesity say they don't feel comfortable raising it with their own doctor unless the doctor brings it up first. That's not a medical gap. That's a stigma gap, and it costs real lives.
Novo Nordisk supplies roughly half of Pakistan's insulin and serves close to a million patients here. Their "Live Lighter" message is simple: you don't have to manage this alone, and medical options exist.
Conversations like this are exactly why partnerships between health innovators and policymakers matter. Looking forward to exploring more around the topic with sustained deliberations and action.

A foreign traveler sits in front of an 8,000-metre peak in Pakistan. Locals who don’t speak his language walk past, insist he take half their cake, and leave.
No cameras for show. Just the quiet, unforced hospitality that still defines large parts of this country. unmatched 🇵🇰🫶🏽

“If a day passes without fooling a foreigner, it was wasted.” That’s what Russians say about India, according to one who’s actually lived there.
He never said that about Pakistan. Some reputations are built by policy. Others are built one guest at a time.
“We have a saying in Russia - our people who’ve lived in India say if a day passes without someone trying to fool a foreigner, it was a wasted day. Pakistan doesn’t treat guests that way.”

A Russian diplomat just admitted on camera what most countries won’t say out loud: for decades, Pakistan simply wasn’t worth the investment to them.
That calculation is changing. Free Russian scholarships, every level, BA to PhD.
Relationships don’t shift because of sentiment. They shift when the geopolitical math changes - and that’s exactly what’s happening to Pakistan’s position right now, with more than one country doing this same recalculation simultaneously.
“After the Soviet era, we didn’t spend much on Pakistan - we didn’t see any geopolitical benefit in training its youth.”
Sergey’s blunt admission. But he says that’s changing, with free @RusEmbPakistan scholarships now open for BA, MA & even PhD.

He’s interpreted for Putin. He’s fluent in Urdu. And he just told Pakistani youth something uncomfortable: you don’t know your own history, and the world judges your country by how carelessly you talk about it abroad.
He’s not wrong. Ask ten people on Islamabad’s own streets about pre-partition history, Gandhara, the Indus Valley, even the founding of the capital itself - most will struggle.
Soft power starts at home. You can’t export pride in a story you haven’t bothered to learn.
“Ask any kid in Islamabad - nobody knows the history. We know more about your country than you do.”
