On behalf of the government and people of South Africa, I offer warm congratulations to His Excellency President @PaulKagame and the government and people of Rwanda on securing a 10-year agreement to host the Formula 1 African Grand Prix.
South Africa shares in the pride with which Rwanda is preparing to fly the chequered flag for our continent with the hosting of a globally prestigious event at the planned Bugesera circuit from the early 2030s.
This contract is a recognition of the capabilities of the Rwandan nation and of our continent more broadly.
As host of the first Grand Prix on African soil in 1993, and organiser of other major global events, South Africa will be happy to provide any support we may be invited to share.
The F1 African Grand Prix is another lustrous addition to Rwanda’s growing collection of top international events, including the UCI-classified Tour du Rwanda cycling race.
Congratulations, Rwanda.
You are in pole position to make all of Africa proud and take motorsport to new heights.

RWANDA TO ANNOUNCE F1 GRAND PRIX AS CENTREPIECE OF BUGESERA AIRPORT CITY’S SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT HUB BACKED BY RWANDA QATAR INVESTMENTS
Rwanda is expected to officially announce its 2030 Formula 1 Grand Prix, potentially marking the championship’s return to Africa for the first time since the 1993 South African Grand Prix at Kyalami. A new permanent circuit designed by Wurz Design, led by former F1 driver Alexander Wurz, who is also a co-designer of Saudi Arabia’s Qiddiya circuit, is planned near the new Bugesera International Airport, approximately 40 km from Kigali’s city centre. It will serve as the centrepiece of a wider sports and entertainment city within the emerging Airport City.
Bugesera International Airport, backed by major Qatari investment, is being developed with Qatar holding a 60% stake in the project. The airport is targeted to open in 2027 or 2028, with its first phase designed to handle up to 7 million passengers and 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually. Rwanda and Qatar are also pursuing the broader development of the Airport City and its sports and entertainment hub, the twin pillars of the F1 vision. Together, these developments are expected to anchor logistics, hospitality, residential, cultural and leisure facilities across more than 2,000 hectares.
The permanent circuit is envisioned as a year round destination for Formula 1, concerts, festivals and other motorsport events, with discussions involving MotoGP and additional racing series reportedly underway. The anticipated announcement could attract fresh international investor interest in Bugesera’s emerging lakeside city, accelerating private investment in hotels, entertainment venues, logistics and supporting infrastructure as Rwanda positions the area as a regional aviation, sports and investment hub.
