Why "Balance & Assimilation" Matters in Bangalore and Beyond.. Recent reports of preferential hiring in private companies where managerial bias allegedly favours candidates based on language or regional origin over merit have once again sparked intense debate in Karnataka. This friction isn't unique to Karnataka/India. But to understand why these flashpoints keep recurring, we need to step back and look at human migration through two critical lenses, Balance & Assimilation (Remember these two words) Looking Abroad (US/Canada/Australia/UK etc): Who is targeted, and why? When Indians face anti-immigrant sentiment or backlash in the US, Canada, Australia, or Europe, who is targeted? Is it specifically Kannadigas, Tamils, Gujaratis, or Punjabis? No. To the host nation, we are simply immigrants. Post-2014, a section of the Indian diaspora began feeling a sense of "we have arrived on the world stage." In many cases, this confidence turned into loud, un-assimilated displays in public spaces hosting massive Ganga Aartis along the River Thames, or performing large-scale idol immersions in local European ponds Or Bursting crackers on Diwali and Midnight in a quite residential areas. To the local populations of those host countries, these sudden, loud shifts often coupled with lapses in public civic sense. It disrupts their way of life, highlighting the contrast rather than the connection. The resulting pushback isn't born overnight, it is triggered when host societies feel their local culture is being overwritten rather than respected. Coming back to those two words again. Balance & Assimilation Every state in India is akin to a distinct country rich with its own unique history, language, heritage, and civilisational pride. When migration patterns become lopsided, friction is inevitable whether across international borders or across state lines within India. 1. Balance Currently, only a handful of tech hubs and metropolitan cities bear the immense load of national employment creation from high-tech corporate roles to gig-economy workers. Because several regional state governments fail to create robust local employment policies, millions are forced to move to a few concentrated urban center's like Bengaluru. When the volume of migration into a single region exceeds its natural capacity, it creates a severe social, infrastructure, and demographic imbalance. When local qualified candidates feel excluded even in their home state due to insular managerial networks, that imbalance reaches a boiling point. 2. Assimilation Migration works when there is integration. When you relocate to a new place whether Toronto or Bengaluru how much effort do you make to integrate? Learning the local language, understanding the region's history, celebrating local festivals, and respecting local norms bridges the gap between being a permanent "outsider" and becoming an integral part of the local fabric. When migrants bring their customs but refuse to embrace or respect the host region's culture, language, and civic expectations, they remain isolated. Over time, this lack of effort creates resentment. Takeaway Opportunity creates migration, but respect and balance sustain harmony. If we expect host nations abroad to welcome Indian talent, Indian immigrants abroad must practice civic responsibility and cultural integration. Likewise, within India, as citizens move across state lines for work, practicing merit-based fairness, learning the local language, and respecting the host state's cultural heritage isn't just courtesy it is essential for peaceful coexistence. Without Balance in policy and Assimilation in practice, local revolts against migration will continue to brew whether in global capitals or here at home.
