Texas public schools get a basic allotment of $6,215 per student. Private-school vouchers? $10,474.
After years of barely increasing basic funding for public schools, Texas politicians found billions for private-school vouchers.
And the state’s own dashboard shows only 17.38% of voucher recipients attended public school in grades 2–12 the previous year.
We aren’t funding school choice, we are subsidizing private-school tuition with taxpayer dollars while public schools struggle.
Greg Abbott did this. Vote him OUT.
.@DonHuffines launched the TEFA Transparency Dashboard so that Texans can “see how their tax dollars are being spent.” Groups under 10 students are masked; his office notes this “prevents individuals from being identified.”

Not only does John Williams cheekily slip Yoda’s Theme into E.T.'s Halloween scene, but Debra Winger plays the zombie nurse.
The iconic moon shot is the actual moon. ILM had mere minutes over three nights per month to get the perfect shot.
It took three months to nail it.

42 years ago tonight, a boy named Daniel Larusso was brutally attacked by a gang of masked thugs.
Two months and one illegal crane kick later, young Daniel would exact his revenge with the help of a maintenance man from Okinawa.
Please remember the true meaning of Halloween.

Halloween could be the Super Bowl of eating bugs.
There are bugs in candy, but not all are there on purpose. Insects get into crops like cocoa, and it isn't practical to clean out every fragment, so FDA has a limit. It steps in when chocolate averages 60 or more insect fragments per 100 grams, which means a pound can carry about 270 and still pass.
The ones on purpose are on the label. Confectioner's glaze is shellac, a resin made by the lac insect, and it's the shine on Reese's Pieces, Whoppers and Hot Tamales.
FDA says fragments under its limits are not a health hazard. Halloween just puts a lot more of them in circulation. Americans are expected to spend $4.1 billion on Halloween candy this year, according to the National Retail Federation.

Before Hollywood, I was living in a van in Hawaii and waiting tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Company. One day, the incredible Rae Dawn Chong walked into the restaurant, and naturally, I went up to her table and said, “Hey, you’re a movie star! What are you doing here?”
She asked if I could act, and I said, “Fuck yeah, put me in your movie!”
She asked for my phone number. The only problem was I didn’t have one. So I gave her my buddy Mike’s number instead. A couple days later, Mike casually mentions, “Oh, by the way, someone called you.” ARE YOU KIDDING ME, MIKE?!
I called her back, and sure enough, she was serious. I drove over to pick up the script, went back to Mike’s house, and read all 120 pages three times in a row. First script I’d ever read. My character's name was Devon, and I remember thinking, “Sweet! I could totally play a Devon!”
I showed up to the audition with every line and inflection mapped out in pencil. Rae told me I could act and offered me the part. I asked if we were shooting in Hawaii. Nope. Los Angeles.
I had about $60 to my name, a bag of clothes, and some rollerblades.
Then Rae told me they'd fly me out. And I remember thinking right then and there, my life just changed forever. I'm going to be an actor.
That little movie was Cursed Part 3, a low-budget horror comedy that opened the door to Hollywood for me.
I'll forever be grateful to Rae for taking a chance on a kid working at a shrimp restaurant. Everybody starts somewhere, and this is where it all began for me.
