Creativity can be developed.
The training environment must foster decision making and creativity.
Always telling a player what to do, and then expecting them to be a creative playmaker is a juxtaposition.

At just 25 years old, Derrin Little was hired as the head football coach for Chatham Central High School in July 2023.
On his first day of workouts that summer there were eight people on the field. Little, another coach, and six players.
Chatham Central went 0-11 that season. The Bears improved to 1-10 in 2024 and kept that record in 2025 after defeating Graham — a program that didn’t even field a team this year — in the season-opener before dropping 10 straight to end the campaign.
But in Year 4 under Little, things have been different for him and the Bears. After beginning his tenure with a 2-31 record through three seasons, Chatham Central once again ended a regular season with the number 10 as part of its record.
Only this time — it came before the hyphen.
Chatham Central football closed the 2026 regular season with a 10-0 record just one year after going 1-10. The Bears won the Greater Triad 1A/2A Conference with a 6-0 run to claim the program’s first-ever conference championship in its 60+ years of existence. It is the most wins in program history, and needless to say, the first undefeated regular season.
“Knowing the history of this program,” Little said after clinching the conference championship. “Knowing my history since I've been here. To say that we're getting ready to hang up any kind of banner in the gym, it's an amazing feeling.”

Too many QBs learn to throw routes without understanding the SPLASH DOWN SPACES they attack.
One yard too short or deep can turn a completion into an INT.
Every route has a LID that limits its availability against coverage.

Placement and angle of the stride step can make a huge difference with a QB’s throw.
For placement, stepping off midline creates room for the pelvis to optimally rotate.
For the angle, keeping the toes slightly closed helps to create a stable foot/ankle complex to rotate into and help transfer energy up the kinetic chain.

Make it look different to the defense without making it different for your players.
Example: You’re running Inside Zone.
2x2 Spread – Inside Zone
3x1 Trips – Inside Zone
12 Personnel – Inside Zone
Bunch Formation – Inside Zone
Jet Motion – Inside Zone with window dressing
H-Back Insert – Inside Zone with an added insert block
Different formations. Different presentations. Different things the defense has to communicate and adjust to.
But your offensive line is still executing the same core blocking scheme.
That’s how you build an offense around execution instead of memorization.
Make the defense think. Let your players PLAY.

Slot is such an important concept in throwing athletes.
For QBs, a level slot is typically around 90-110 degrees of shoulder abduction.
Both low and high slots can be problematic by placing unnecessary stress on the arm and resulting in less control over the release.
When a QB has a slot issue I look globally at the entire kinetic chain. Typically slot, is a “result of” rather than the primary issue.
My progression of coaching is to find the deficiency, isolate and improve, and then piece back together the motion.
