Two former senior FBI officials, Nikki Cole Floris and Bradley Benavides, were taken into custody today on charges of allegedly lying to Congress about their involvement in the FBI’s investigations into Hunter Biden. The charges stem from an ongoing investigation into the since-dissolved FBI Foreign Influence Task Force. Floris led the FITF as a Deputy Assistant Director from mid-2019 through mid-2022. Benavides was the FITF Section Chief from mid-2019 through the 2020 election. Both testified that the FITF was not involved in the Hunter Biden investigations. October 21, 1966. Dawn. Eight T-28 fighter-bombers take off from Savannakhet in southern Laos. They aren't headed for the Ho Chi Minh Trail. They're headed for their own capital. Leading the strike is Brigadier General Thao Ma, commander of the Royal Lao Air Force. Thao Ma was a rarity among Laotian generals: a real fighting man. He started as a paratrooper under the French, retrained as a pilot, and by 1959 was running the entire Lao air force. He didn't command from a desk. He personally flew strike missions against the North Vietnamese on the Ho Chi Minh Trail and in support of Vang Pao's Hmong army. He was an innovator, too. Before the Americans fielded their famous AC-47 gunship, Thao Ma was bolting heavy machine guns into the doors of old C-47 transports and rigging rollers so his crews could roll 250-pound bombs out the cargo door in flight. His problem was the other generals. Several of Laos's top army commanders were running gold and opium smuggling operations, and they wanted the air force's C-47 transport planes to move their product. Thao Ma refused. He turned down their bribes and told them flatly his pilots would not be used to smuggle drugs. They came after him. In 1965, a land mine blew up a jeep in his entourage in what everyone believed was an assassination attempt by his rivals. They bribed some of his own pilots to mutiny. They stripped the transports away from his command and gave them to an officer who would cooperate. Then they ordered him to move his headquarters to Vientiane, where they could watch him. Thao Ma was convinced he would be killed. So he struck first. The plan: one army regiment would arrest the two generals visiting Savannakhet, General Ouane Rattikone and General Bounthone Marthepharak. Another would be flown to Vientiane to take the capital. Thao Ma would lead an air strike on army headquarters to kill the rest. Almost all of it went wrong. He had told an American air attaché about the plan, and the warning reached Vientiane. The generals he was after fled army headquarters just before the bombs hit. The regiment never arrested Ouane. The second regiment never took off. The bribe money never showed up. But the planes went. The eight T-28s cut across Thai airspace to reach Vientiane, so Thailand scrambled its fighters. The US Air Force briefly canceled every mission over Laos and launched F-102 interceptors. Nobody knew what was happening. At 8:30 a.m., Thao Ma's planes hit a gun park, two ammunition depots, the Royal Lao Army headquarters, and the villa of General Kouprasith, one of his chief rivals. At least 23 people were killed. He was getting ready for a second strike when the American ambassador, the British ambassador and a Lao prince flew down to Savannakhet and talked him out of it. That night, Thao Ma and his loyal pilots climbed into their T-28s and flew into exile in Thailand. Back home, he was sentenced to death. The generals now had their transport planes. Within months, General Ouane contracted for a 16-ton opium shipment, the one that led to the 1967 Opium War, where he bombed both sides and kept the opium for himself. Thao Ma waited seven years. On August 20, 1973, he came back from Thailand with 60 followers, seized Wattay Air Base outside Vientiane, jumped into a T-28 and dive-bombed General Kouprasith's villa, demolishing it. When he came back to land, loyal troops had already retaken the airfield. A .50-caliber machine gun on a truck shot his plane down. He was dragged from the wreck, wounded, and taken to Kouprasith's headquarters. Kouprasith had him executed on the spot. Thao Ma was 42.
