Houndstooth! Royal & Ancient.
The oldest design in the Scottish Register of Tartans is the “Shepherd” or “Falkirk” tartan. Technically more of a check, this design was found in a scrap of material stuffed into the neck of a jar containing Roman coins, buried about 260 A.D.

Kenneth MacAlpin (Medieval Gaelic: Cináed mac Ailpín) is traditionally regarded as the first King of Scotland. Ruling from around 843 AD until his death in 858 CE, he famously united the Gaelic kingdom of Dál Riata with the kingdom of the Picts. This historic merger laid the structural foundation for the Kingdom of Alba, which eventually evolved into modern Scotland.🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👑⚔️

Fionn’s Rock aka Praying Hands of Mary, Glen Lyon. This takes your mind back into Scotland’s Celtic heritage and folklore as it is said the rock was split by an arrow fired by Fionn Mac Cumhaill i.e., the legendary Scottish warrior Fingal. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿💙⛰️💚

The discovery of a massive early medieval silver chain was reported by The Orcadian #OTD in 1863. Labourers found it while digging at Parkhill, Aberdeenshire. Of a type unique to Scotland, its clasp bears symbols inlaid with red enamel. 📸National Museums Scotland

As the World Cup approaches, I decided today to make a sort of pilgrimage visit to the world’s oldest football. Found above Mary Queen of Scots bedroom in Stirling castle, the ball is thought to date to the 1540s. In fact, the young queen Mary may even have kicked it herself!

The World's Tallest and Longest hedge is the Meikleour beech hedge in Perthshire. It is one third of a mile long and 98ft high. It was planted in 1745 and local legend says the hedge grows towards the heavens, because the men who planted it were killed at the Battle of Culloden.
