As I'm researching the Army of Vicksburg, I came across this cipher from Gen. Pemberton to Gov. Pettus in the @CwrgmProject archives. The message "fea vosmleee elttbs nv qeudwfo" translates to "ten thousand troops at Jackson".

Woke up at 3:30am thinking QGIS (said a few people once or twice?) Decided to put some ideas to work & am loving the possibilities for mapping @CWRGMatUSM data. I blame you @abbymullen & your fab #dmmh workshop!

I think this will be a great resource of information for lawmakers who are fighting this research. It will be a window into America’s history of neglect towards American Descendants of Slavery. Union and Confederate soldiers were complicit.

Like I said in the CWRGM statement @chefcarney "...what you find here will not always inspire hope. Often history does the opposite. But it is through an honest exploration of the past that we can build a better informed & more hopeful future." Glad you see value in the project!

This is going to be an amazing resource for historians going forward - and hopefully a model for other states as well. And the fact that the director is one of the best professors around doesn’t hurt either. Congratulations @susannahjural
