Fred Kent, the founder of Project for Public Spaces (PPS), once said something along the lines of if you design for people, you get more people, if you design for cars, you get more traffic.
Transpo agencies have been trying to reduce traffic congestion by adding roadway capacity. This has backfired spectacularly. But they have not changed their strategy and are totally undeterred by this total failure. That’s the spirit!

When we are done with paying our half of the $1.4 billion going into this stadium, there needs to be an agreement in place for no more London or overseas games. Keep that gameday money in Jacksonville!
The Jaguars home game today vs. the Colts is their only home game in an eight-week stretch.
🏈Oct. 4: at Cincinnati
🏈Oct. 11: vs. Eagles in London
🏈Oct. 18: vs. Texans in London
🏈Oct. 25: bye week
🏈Today: Colts
🏈Nov. 5: at Baltimore
🏈Nov. 15: at Tennessee
🏈Nov. 22: at the NY Giants
Additionally the Jaguars are playing in EverBank Stadium, which is a construction zone. The upper deck is closed off, and seating capacity has been reduced from roughly 67,000 to 42,500.
Next season the Jaguars will play their home games at Camping World Stadium in Orlando before their renovated stadium opens in 2028.

The Emerald Trail has been a bipartisan effort from the very beginning. One opinion from a mayoral hopeful doesn’t change that. But for someone who apparently cares about neglected neighborhoods, this is a god awful take.
Jacksonville has committed over $100 million in taxpayer funding to the Emerald Trail, yet approximately 15% of the planned 30-mile network is complete, including trails that existed before the current project.
Five years after the major funding commitment, residents deserve transparency about how much has actually been spent, what has been delivered, and how much more it will cost to finish. Which by the way started under the previous Mayor.
The real question is: Should this project remain a funding priority when Jacksonville has so many other pressing needs? Do you want to keep dumping millions into a bicycle trail?

The vision of the highway sold during the World's Fair was incredible, but it NEVER materialized and made our cities and the way we live far worse. Take Miami for example:

The parking lot of this appliance store in Long Island City, Queens was purchased for $53 million, or $444,000 per parking space. It will become a 26 story building with 560 housing units, of which 25% will be affordable. The opportunity cost of surface parking is insane.

"Cars pay their way."
User fees (gas taxes, tolls, etc.) cover about 50% of road spending, and that of course doesn't have anything to do with costs of negative externalities.
It's an especially rotten scenario for people who don't drive much because we're forced to subsidize the travel expenses of other people.
About 1 in 4 people in the US. don't drive. You'd think that's substantial enough to consider the negative externalities of subsidized car infrastructure.
Look at how dense downtown Jacksonville was! This was in the 1930s, back before we cut highways through it and tore down buildings for parking.

Nobody who's traveled, even via aerial maps, needs to be told that this is the USA🇺🇸.
1. Freeway walling off river.
2. Vast freeway interchange maximizing waste of valuable urban land.
3. Extensive surface parking.
I know this city, but it's also almost every US city.

Fun fact: 90 acres of historic riverfront neighborhoods were destroyed for the St. Louis Gateway Arch National Park.
The Skyway and U2C/NAVI come to mind here. Sometimes just going back to older and proven technologies while deploying them well is the most innovative thing you can do. Everything else often ends up being expensive and quickly outdated toys.

Yes, public transit is an 18th century idea. If it's lasted this long, maybe there's a reason.
Remember:
1. Many old ideas are good ideas.
2. Most innovations fail, or at least disappoint.
Don't throw away useful tools in return for airy promises.
